Mame - How to use Joystick?

I have YDL 5.0, Custom Joystick, Logitech USB Controller, and a Sixaxis
I followed the Xmame guide and read thru the topic but all the suggestions didn't work.

Those are my settings in the xmamerc file but my Joystick and Sixaxis still don't work. What do I do?

I want the Custom Joystick to work the most. It's basically a PS1 Controller.

Edit: My Logitech USB Controller works perfectly on SNES9x

Dont think so. I have gentoo and had problems with getting a joystick to work with MAME but I just re-installed it with the command USE="joystick" because MAME doesnt have joystick support by default I was told.

Where do I use the command at? Damn so I can't use Yumex eh?

Don't know. I don't know anything about installing apps on ydl. Do you have the gui for mame? If so does the joystick show up under the joystick option(should be the last option in preferences before running a game).

No gui, Well atleast I don't know how if there is

You should get the GUI it will make you life alot easier.

With the GUI it will be like this:


When you go to load a game the properties tabs will show. This:


Go to the controller tab and click down and select your joystick

I can't get GXmame to work (has the error, it's in the quote), I tried reinstalling xmame and gxmame and when I start gxmame it still has that error, I can load xmame but I still can't do much without my Joystick.

Hmm since I'm not on Yellowdog I don't know what else to say sorry Gxmame installed fine for me on gentoo.

Edit: Maybe I can help. The guide says to say:

Yours is set to 0 could that be the cause? Also so when you hit tab to get into the menu while in MAME does it not let you change the controls to the joystick? Also is there a js0 file in the /dev/input/ directory? If your trying more than one joystick at a time it will be under a different name like js1.
