I just typed in emerge gnome and it didnt have any errors. I have seen a few people here have problems installing gnome or KDE the only thing I can think of is that something went wrong during the install the gentoo.

The following message has nothing to do with the problems you are having, but it was a problem I ran into and I had to reinstall 7+ times before I noticed it. When you edit rc.conf (I think) the wiki tells you to change the XSESSION from "Gnome" to "fluxbox". When you do this... DELETE THE WHOLLY UNHOLY "#" FROM I FRONT OF IT!!! I didn't figure it out untill I tried several installs, but it tricks the booting process into thinking that line is unimportant and is just note for the user, and ignores it. When it does this it boots under a "vanilla" xsession, whitch I thought was fluxbox. And when I would install kde (too impatiant for gnome) and change it, it wouldn't boot under kde.
Also question for sinfulfate. I think I know how to my external hard drive now. When I use mount /dev/whatever, do I need to type in a flag or something to allow me to write? I figure out how to mount now, I just can't write. |

No. It's FAT32 I believe. I can mount and read it, but I can't write to it. That's my only problem. I don't care if I can pull a "plug-and-play" trick with it, even though I would like to, and have to mount it repeatedly, but for now I just want to be able to write to it.
