Follow one of those tutorials, you need to open the ISO. Not just stick it on the disk.

How could the .iso be a .rar?

You need to find an option like "burn image to disk" and select "ubuntu-7.04ps3.iso" or whatever it is just make sure it has .iso at the end. And burn it at the slowest possible speed.

Unpack the ISO from the RAR with WinRAR. Burn the ISO to a CD-R with UltraISO (Worked for me)
