Default PS3 Resolution

Well, I finally got a graphical install, I chose xubuntu out of simplicity and speed (much more lightweight than Gnome or KDE because it uses xfce).

Anyways, I know how to set the video mode, using ps3videomode, however, this leaves 1 inch black bars all of the way around my screen. Is there a way to adjust the resolution settings of ps3videomode, or am I just stuck with this?

I've been having the exact same problem on FC5 a few minutes ago, I tried multiple different ps3videomodes' and none of them work properly, except a few which leave huge black bars around the edge just like yours.

My PS3 is hooked up to my HDTV with a HDMI cable so it goes up to 1080i but it just won't let me go to 1080i in Fedora Core 5, even if I use the 'Full Screen' command setting using 480p it will just leave the FC5 desktop on both sides of the screen with a 2 inch black bar going right down the middle, the top and bottom.

I'm about to give up hope, even after having to re-install it again a few hours ago because the screen resolution didn't want to work for me

I can fix that problem for you.

It sounds like you are setting the ps3videomode through a terminal while in a windowing system.

You need to edit your kboot.conf.

Try this before you reinstall and see if it works.

Type:
Code:
nano /etc/kboot.conf
You should see something like this at the bottom of your kboot.conf file:
Code:
Fedora='sda1:/boot/kernel-genkernel-ppc-2.6.16-ps3 initrd=sda1:/boot/initramfs-genkernel-ppc-2.6.16-ps3 root=/dev/sda1
Add a new line, copying the default line that was already in there, saying the exact same thing. EXCEPT:
  • Change Fedora= to something like FedoraTest= (it might not be Fedora=, I don't have Fedora, so I don't know. Figure it out)
  • Add this at the end (put your needed video mode into where X is. 3 is 720p, 4 is 1080i):
Code:
video=ps3fb:mode:X
Make sure to close all quotations, or else you'll have to boot a live CD and fix your kboot.conf, which is a pain, trust me

For example, it should be something like this, to get a 1080i display
Code:
FedoraTest='[kernel and initrd stuff here] ps3fb:mode:4
Reboot, and at the kboot conf, type FedoraTest.

Hopefully, it should work
