Default Breakthrough! RSX access in Linux!

http://forums.ps2dev.org/viewtopic.php?p=59485#59485

It's a bit technical, but it looks like a few of the devs have finally figured out how to gain limited access to the RSX under Linux thanks to a security hole in the hypervisor.

IMO, if Sony doesn't block this with a future firmware update we could potentially start seeing some really cool stuff emerge from PS3 Linux in the next year or so.

Same thing on the reports buffer. It starts with:

(looks like some guys at Sony or IBM have humor...)
Haha, if that was not on purpose then wow what's the chances :P

As an aside, this could potentially be GREAT news for those who end up buying a 40GB PS3 and still want to play their PS2 games on the same system.

Absolutely, If you have a system with no BC, PCSX2 could benefit from RSX access

It was only done partually by software. There was another chip (not Emotion Engine) in the old models that did it.

It is done by Software on SKUs without the EE, however the new 40GB one will have no EE or GS thus eliminating it being able to play PS2 games without full emulation(as i understand anywho).

There were two PS2 chips inside the PS3, the GS and EE. EE was removed a while ago, but now the GS is removed from the 40 gig. It never was fully software.

Wow... "limited access"? More like limited memory space for commands. Up to 1.93 and we can still map that area of the memory, I think... Sony is going to announce 3D acceleration for Linux soon. They would not just leave that out in the open without a reason... or maybe they did do that to make us find it (hence the 13 37 code) and use it. Kind of a good way to motivate the developer community, I guess. Heck, I could spend my entire day of coding (actually, more like sending commands back and forth) just to find that... and I'll satisfyingly laugh my ass off.

Edit: No ISO, guys. It doesn't mean we can break out of OtherOS into GameOS and then magically run something. It just means we can speed up video processes in Linux... and maybe... with a bit of luck, we can trigger some limited 3D modes in Linux.

Ehh... no. The available memory is much too... small for something like Beryl. Then again, a software 3D renderer will do the trick just as well. One SPE on the PS3 is really comparable to a very high-speed GPU... something like a GeForce 3.
