Default PS3 Linux partition read/write to the PS3 partition?

    Hey,
Im a first time poster, long time... um... stalker? haha. Anyway, Im well considering putting Debian on the dirty old PS3, and am just wondering what the deal is with the partitions. I read that you can only choose 10GB for either the PS3 or for Linux (which puts paid to my plan of going 50/50). I wholly intend on making my PS3 a media centre, with something like MMS, but Ive got gigs and gigs of movies I want to dump on the machine, and 10 gigs just isn't enough. Can you read and write to the PS3 partition and use it's space, or is there no driver to access that file system?
    Cheer.

You can only set it up in the 50 GB / 10 GB partitioning system. And no, the Linux partition can't read the PS3 OS partition and vice versa. What I would recommend doing for you is to set 10 GB for the Linux partition, and then get an external hard drive for all of your storage. That's just my two cents though :)

Seems barely worth upgrading the internal hard drive then... not that that will stop me or anything.

    Cheers guys :-)

You have no idea what you're talking about... do you?

You can swap out the hard drives in any PS3, and that doesn't change whether or not it can read PS2 discs. It only matters what hard drive size your PS3 initially came with (it's the easiest way to distinguish between the models).

On topic: Even if you upgrade to a larger hard drive though, you're still limited to 10 GB for one OS, and the rest of the drive for the other... It would be better to get an externala hard drive, because if you choose the right format, you should be able to read that external drive from both the Linux partition and the PS3 OS.

That's what I do. I have a NTFS 250GB that I share between my laptop and my PS3.

That format would be FAT32 right (but not formatted with windoze from what I read - all good, Ill put PQMagic to work) - I did initially try hooking up my external, NTFS formatted 60GB drive, but it wouldn't stay on (it always turns itself off if it loses USB connectivity so Im guessing the PS3 looked at it, then just said no - its one of these dubious ones that are actually supposed to be an oversized iPod, but is awful at that and better at being just a hard drive).

Luckily, it decided to crap itself last night before I got the chance so now Ive got some investigative work to do to find out if its the HDD or the enclosure, in which case my poor little 40GB PS3 might be getting a minor upgrade early.

    Screwdrivers ahoy hahaha.
