What OS's are currently running on the PS3.

And can I boot into the XMB, then the OS?

So far it seems Linux distros that have Cell support in the Kernel, and no.

Debian, Fedora 8, Gentoo, OpenSUSE, Ubuntu, and Yellow Dog Linux can be run on the PS3.

Although in my opinion YDL is the best one to use as it has less restrictions to the cell and the PS3 itself than any other distro.

Yes but in order to do that you must exit Linux by booting the other os witch is the XMB. But just turning off the PS3 in Linux will boot Linux when you turn it back on. As this is the PS3's default os at the moment.

You can change the default to and boot into the XMB by typing boot-game-os at either a linux terminal or at the kboot (if you're on YDL6, its different but idk what it is). You can also switch off ur PS3, then hold down the power button until it beeps twice. That will make it boot to the XMB.

Could I temporary boot Linux without actually installing it?

Nope all you'll see is the boot loader.

what are you trying to do with this?

Ubuntu- is the linux I'd recommend, btw.

I recommend YDL since it was developed for the PS3 cell architecture so it runs better than most other distros.
