Default Hardcore Linux OS On PS3

Yea Im familiar with linux but is there a OS compatible with PS3 thats based on power using? Like Im thinking of really getting into programming and using the PS3 to compile and stuff... My main pc is only 512 mb ram and 1999 mhz... I know for sure Ubuntu isnt it, I think Yellow dog would do, anyone know a better OS?

BTW, is the linux distros that can be used for PS3 is more like a "weared down" version?

I heard Gentoo Works...

Yeah, Gentoo works. However, in my experiences, I've noticed that PS3 Linux is just very slow. Even in gentoo, it seems to be quite sluggish. I don't know how it would compare to a 2 ghz machine, but I would probably just stick with Linux on your PC.

If you want maximum power, don't use the GUI. Without it, you can run any linux distro on an i386. Or if you absolutely have to use one, install XFCE.

Yeah, using the PS3 as a command line linux box will run linux as well as it needs to be run....

As far as compiling, what are you programming in ? C/C+ are no sweat...havn't played with the YDL build much cause I have an SDTV, but as it can run/build anything built around PPC architecture, then any GCC or other compiling libraries built to run on PPC will run on PS3 with YDL....

Also with YDL being the "official" build of linux for the PS3 it supposedly has better support for the cell, not sure if this has been defunct yet tho....

and when it comes down to it you will be sacrificing memory for much better CPU.....and since compiling is mainly CPU dependant, then the PS3 should compile your programs faster....but if your programs requires more ram, the PS3 may run them worse.....but, it's quite the program that uses up 256meg or ram....and no disrespect, but if you are asking these questions, then your programs wouldn't use 256 megs of ram

I cant edit for some reason so i'm double posting it up...

forgot to say...

http://forums.ps2dev.org/

This should be your bible if you want to get into PS3 programming, read everything posted there...

Back in the day when PSP programming was in it's infancy, these were the guys to figure everything out......even if you don't understand half of what they say, you will learn somthing....

Any breakthroughs in writing PS3 specific libraries for programming in C variants will come from them....lot's of assembly language too....fun stuff
