This is a discussion on The only way to get all your gigs back.. within the PS3 Linux forums, part of the PS3 Main category; is to do a whole format and not a quick one? I'm confused....

And no, a full format won't get you any more space then a quick one. |

The only difference between a full and quick format is the way the data is deleted from the HDD.
There is no difference in what is deleted or how much space will be made available. Personally I've never bothered with a Full format on anything, if I had data to hide then I would but a quick format does the job just fine. |

well this should clear out your doubt.. this is the simplest way to explain it..
A Quick format: Just clears data A Full format: Checks disk for bad sectors and clears data but in both cases the data is wiped.. if u really wanna wipe all traces to your data if u've got something confidential on your HDD then your can zero fill the drive in which case the whole HDD is written with zeroes so that leaves no traces... but again, there is no visible space difference between the 2 methods.. i hope you can understand what i mean.. |

the rest of the space is taken up by the ps3 for system management, that comes to around 12%(not fixed though) of the total space which is out of 55gigs..you can find this info in the ps3 packaging.. thats normal.. my friends 40gig ps3 showed 32gigs out of the box so no need to worry... |

On my 250GB the PS3 actually uses about 5GB when formatted.

It doesn't use 5GB. It's the difference between 250000000000 bytes and 268435456000 bytes.
250 billion bytes = 232.83064365386962890625 GB. This is what you get when you buy a 250"GB" hard drive. A GB is actually 1024*1024*1024 bytes, not 1000*1000*1000 bytes, which is what they sell you as a GB.

Well the PS3 definately sets aside some space for whatever it sets it aside for....after doing a format (quick) my 80gig (new one without BC) only had 74 gigs free....so the PS3 is setting aside 5-6 gigs for something....I understand how big a gig is, and the difference between what they say 80 gigs is and what it actually is, still the difference is not 6 gigs.
Also the difference between a quick and full format is that a Full format actually writes zeroes to all the sectors of the HDD, whereas a quick format only does this to the first and last X number of sectors, not sure what the exact number is though....
