Post Ps3 linux information and distro reviews

this thread has been moved to http://www.haxnetwork.net/showthread...8341#post88341 . Ill be updating both this site and that site. Please continue to leave feed back so i can update and tweak this guide to perfection.

This is to help people understand linux for the ps3. Most information on the this is hard to find and scattered out through out the web. This is still very much a beta thread.

THE POSITIVES

***Classic gaming
Lets see chrono cross any one. Maybe the first 6 final fantasy games. How bout street fighter alpha series and phantasy star. No? How about this: virtually every game made for the snes, nes, genesis and many more emulators all on a hdtv. Also scumm vm and dos box. Its heaven for a classic gamer.
Example vidoes:

mame- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsQOr...eature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4yvPV...eature=related

***Knowledge you learn
Linux is different from windows. With this said it takes time to learn everything about linux. Also with this said as you learn this you learn a lot about computers and how they work. Linux is also open source so this is a good environment to learn how to develop things.

***Computer Functionality
Ps3 linux offers everything windows does. Firefox, email, instant messager, and much more that most competers can do. Also its on a hdtv =].

***mac and windows emulation
well ill start off with qemu. This can emulate mac os x and windows visa at very slow speeds. This is useful however if you need to run a lets say windows visa specific app. But thats not what i wanted to mention. The good part is it can emulate windows 95 at speeds that are very usable. also it can run games at playable speeds with windows 95.
videos:
Qemu with widnows xp-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vz9UtiTqaoI
mac osx- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cEke...eature=related
windows 95- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQHlFPRPhHA
windows 98- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Me8w4Y0Jn1c

Now for mac emulation we have a thing called basilisk ii. This can basically run mac os up to 8.1. This allows you to use mac classic apps. Also sheepshaver alows you to run some mac apps. This gives you a good mix of cross platform for you ps3 linux to use.
videos:
basilisk ii- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEkeAvxjQGo

***Games
Linux does have games that you can download and play and they are mostly free. Now the downside is that ps3 linux has no 3d accelarators. But even with that there are many games to download and play such as doom, quake 1 and 2 and maybe 3, hexen, and many more.
vidoes:
quake II http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9VUmWnpCbg
hexen 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyOCwZJXjL4

***Safety
Setting up linux dual partitions your hard drive. So to put it simpily if you linux partion get mess up your ps3 side will remain unaffected. Also linux is much more virus safe than windows since the are less viruses targeting linux.

***Variety
Lets say you already have an mac or a windows based computer. You dont wabt to dual boot the computers you already have but you need linux. Well with ps3 linux you can use linux with messing with your other computers.

NEGATIVE SIDE
ps3 linux is by no means perfect
***Ps3 speed
for some people this is a problem and for some well its not. Let me explain. THe ps3 has no rsx support witch means not 3d acceleration and less ram. Less ram= slower computer. Now what thus all means is that the ps3 linux is slower than the average computer but faster than a computer like mine. So if you have a really old computer like me then ps3 linux will be faster. Either way dont expect ps3 to be a speed demon untill rsx support is fixed.

***3d acceleration
or should i say lack there of. This for alot of people is a big point. This means no n64 emulator and no ps1 emulator. This is a deffinant sore spot. However when the rsx is hacked you can expect full 3d support.

***Installation
compared to windows the installation of some apps can be tedious. Now some apps are easy to install but some arnt.

***No official flash player
adobe doesnt have a ppc linus version for flash. However the are some none adobe flsh players that work alright

In the future
Please read this section
Eventually rsx support will be granted. When and how is not known yet. If sony does not allow support for the rsx it will eventually be hacked. When this happens the ps3 will be able to be used as a full function computer. Now the only hope for official rsx support from sony is for partial rsx support. If sony give full rsx support their games will be pirated. But if there is absolutly no rsx support given by sony some hacker will eventually hack it. And if it gives any of you people hope the rsx has been hacked before but sony shut that down. This just proves that a rsx is possible.
video:
original rsx hack- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTnDan4JK_U

Also unless adobe ports their flash player to linux ppc we are stuck with third part flash players. This is better than nothing but is not fully functional. With that said this players are and will improve. But lets just hope adobe ports it.

REVIEWS
***Yellow dog linux
The curent version is 6.1. Now this is officially supported by sony so that is a deffinant plus. The installation is super easy and i recomend for beginers. Sony also gave ydl 6.1 access to some of the ps3 vram impoving the performance. This is a great os for "noobs."

guide- http://us.fixstars.com/support/insta..._ps3_guide.pdf
video- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebrO5EvfQqM

***Ubuntu
ubuntu comes in one of three distros. You can either get kubuntu, ubuntu, or xubuntu. Kubuntu come with kde is the desktop, Ubuntu witch uses gnome, and Xubuntu witch used xfce. Kubuntu looks the prettiest but will run the slowest. Xubuntu runs the fastest and doesnt look half bad while doing so. So of all the Ubuntu distros id suggest xubuntu. Now ubuntu is a debian based distro. The install is fairly easy but ydl is still the easiest to install. Now some people say that Ubuntu is easier to use after instalation than ydl but unless your a more advanced user stick with ydl. However if you have a basic foundation with linux go ahead and install xubuntu. Also ubuntu distros take a while to install.

kubuntu- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I96Ym...eature=related
xubuntu- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzZRF...eature=related

***Megabox
Now this is a usefull OS. Well this is installed like gentoo but it is alot easier to install than gentoo. Compared to the ydl installation this is hard so once again get a good foundation on linux before installing. However if you can get it installed it is very useful. This is basically a media server based on freevo. It comes with the emulators on it and allows you to watch tv. Sound tempting. It is. But ydl and ubuntu are a lot easier to install. If you have command line experience then go ahead and give this a try.

video- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-NhkRsSVkc

***Gentoo
Now this is a stable linux. I liked it alot. After the installation it was fairly easy to use. The install was pure hell though. The install is all command line and it is long too. If you where able to get megabox installed then go ahead and give this a try. Also if you have gentoo experience then try to install. This is debian based.

part 3-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MriAN2DPyZI&featu re=related

***Debian
This was released and since then has recieved no support. I know of very few people who have installed it. If you have used debian and liked it a lot try to install it but with ubuntu and xubuntu being debian based id go with on of those.
download link- http://ps3.keshi.org/debian-live/20070114/
video-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A29HqZByhhA

***Fedora
I havnt tryed this so ill tell you what i know. It based on red hat linux just like yellow dog linux is. It looks pretty nice. It used rpms like ydl. Also alot of people seem to enjoy it.

video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YRiuk3OQgY
core 5-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnAn3h7kTM4

***opensuse
Again i dont know much about this. I can say it looks nice and that it is alot more popular than debian. Try it if you want to. Apparently this might be unusably slow.
download link- http://software.opensuse.org/
video-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35DlgNraYMg

Ok so like i said this is beta so help me correct it. If im unclear about something ask. Hope this helps you. For any download link make sure you have the ppc version.

This was written by bootlessxfly. Any other copys are fake. If you want to use this on another forum ask and ill probally let you do it.

Is it really true Sony granted access to a portion of the Playstation 3's vRAM in YDL 6.1?

*waits eagerly for response*

Awesome, what other things are new on YDL 6.1, I haven't used it since 5.0 so I'm a little out-of-date, sorry.

Its over all more easy to use. Wifi is easier to access. Also bug fixes. The kernel was updated to the current kernel. Also there is a new repo called bodego has alot of nice apps for you to use. The most important thing is that it is more stable now

I just want to know how much space is with the Linux System. I mean does Linux get 10GB or the Ps3?

You choose how much you want to dedicate to Linux, minimum is 10GB.

They should fully unlock the PS3 for Linux. If they would I'd be happy enough to spend endless nights to make a kickass distro :P

Nope, full RSX means exploits/hacks are then also possible, and Sony will go any length to ensure it doesn't happen.

It's basically like giving a child an RPG and then telling him to not fire it or it will cause destruction, but being kids they just don't listen.

Nice analogy, never knew full access could mean exploits!

Full acces doesnt always mean exploits. There are ways for sony to give linux full access. Now these ways would be very time consuming for sony and (in there opinion) not worth what they would get back. Also they could in theory unlock to use maybe 70 % of the rsx drive. Again this would take time and money that sony doesnt want to spend. Our best guess is with hackers. If you give them time they will come through. They always do.

Could I use torrents on YDL? In turn, if I downloaded an HD video (divx, xvid, etc) would YDL be able to playback in 1080p and in surround sound?

Thanks.

You wouldn't be able to get 1080p playback from Yellow Dog, limited GPU to work with so it's a no go, but you will be able to have Surround Sound though :]

Any kind of HD? What is the video output when you run YDL?

YDL can output the resolution in 1080p but I very much doubt it has enough resources to render a full 1080p HD movie, I'm not so sure about 720p, but it might be able to though :]
