I am new to Linux and dont know much about it benefits or the uses of it. But what are the benefits of putting Linux on a PS3? What sort of tools does it give you? I havent used this forum in a while and just remembered about this after reading a tutorial of putting Linux on PS3 in this month MAXIMU PC.

So before i go install Linux on my PS3, i am just looking for some feedback of the benefits of doing so.

PS3 Linux is severely dwarfed both because of the cell processor and because Sony has put limitations on it. Linux is basically good for web browsing, watching videos that the Sony XMB can't handle (but don't even bother with HD video), emulators and other general applications like word processors. I suppose you could have a lot of fun if you were into developing. Personally, I use linux mostly for the emulators and playing my PAL dvds that the PS3 can't handle.

It should be said that if you want to run emulators don't expect anything better than the SNES to run. Don't even bother with anything that's 3D.

It's not the Cell BE that's being locked down, it's the lack of GPU support available.

It depends on the use.

As a desktop system, it falls behind greatly, due to the limited RAM and video memory given to the Linux system.

But as a headless server, Linux should work very well.
