You can try going to psubuntu.com | Ubuntu on a Playstation 3. Their site is based solely on running Ubuntu on the Playtation.

There are two reasons that the guides aren't updated here. The first is that most of the maintainers were banned and/or pushed out of the community by the previous admin. The other reason is that PS3 Linux is very limited, so not very many people use it.

You won't be able to play SNES on the linux (for PS3 anyways) because there is no access to the RSX from Linux.

That is so wrong on so many levels. SNES works just fine. So do numerous other emulators. Don't post unless you know for certain you know what you are talking about.

Obviously they would load, but there won't be any sound and many other glitches. The code would NEED to be optimized on the PS3 for it to run, since there is no access to hard ware acceleration from the GPU.

My mistake in saying it WOULDN'T be possible, but its not really the best without sound, now is it?

Not to mention I tried running some ROMS on emulators and half of them say ERROR 3 and will not load. (Using the BD-J anyways)

What are you talking about? I've compiled and run Snes9x with many popular roms at full speed with sound (on the PS3). You have to change a few sound options and I don't think you can run at full screen. You can stretch the window to fill your screen though.

Install SNES9X Emulator
SNES9X works fairly well on the PS3, with a few minor caveats, which we'll get to below.

1. Open up a terminal window in Ubuntu and type the following command:

sudo apt-get install snes9express snes9x-x

This will install the emulator.

2. When it's done, "snes9express" will appear under Games in Ubuntu's application launcher. Fire that up.

3. To configure it properly, do the following: under the ROM tab, select the folder that houses all your SNES ROMs (for games you already owned as a kid, of course!); under Sound, make sure "Thread Sound" is selected, or else everything will sound horribly garbled; under Video, check "Scale," "Hi-Res" and "Full Screen."

4. Getting SNES9X to recognize your Sixaxis takes a little bit more juju, but even then, there is still some weirdness. To config, go to the Controllers tab and press "Devices." Change the entries of "Pad 1" (and "Pad 2" if you're using two) from "/dev/js0" to "/dev/input/js0" and hit close. Don't try to Configure Button Maps... for the joysticks.

5. Go back to ROM, choose your game, and hit Power, and it should start up.
like F-Zero, Pilotwings and RPGs like Earthbound (!!!) are totally playable.

Total full-screen does not appear to work (or at least I couldn't get it to work) on the PS3. But you can still drag the window as big as it will get and get the same effect, just with your Ubuntu desktop visible behind
I found this linked on the website I previously recommended.

well i wish it worked under 9.04 but it dosent. stuff like "make sure "Thread Sound" is selected, or else everything will sound horribly garbled; under Video, check "Scale," "Hi-Res" and "Full Screen"", on 9.04 it wont let you change any of that, its all shaded out.

"To config, go to the Controllers tab and press "Devices." Change the entries of "Pad 1" (and "Pad 2" if you're using two) from "/dev/js0" to "/dev/input/js0" and hit close."
it also wont let me do this either, i get to the part where im lookin at the page where im suposta change it but it wont let me change it.
i can get the emulator installed, i got the rom loaded but without being able to go to devices and change the config like it says to... i just end up staring at the games title screen without being able to play or press any buttons.

i guess im just s.o.l. untill some one ports it to 9.04 or whatever it would take. im not the guy for that cuz i lack the nolage to do so.

Everything ran fine for me under Gentoo.

You may want to try to install Ubuntu 8.10 instead, as I think it is more supported. Check out that psubuntu site for details.

If they acually allow more 3D hardware resources to be used then I'd definately use it more often.

Nicely emulated N64 games on my 52" yeah baby!
