Well yea, its not homebrew or a hack for that matter, sony actually wants us to run it, they supply the tools and all that.

It only makes sense. By giving us linux we dont have to "hack" to get it to run and that manes less ppl trying to mod a PS3. Considering the linux ppl are usually the best crackers compared to the piracy and homebrew guys. So linux on the PS3 is a smart move.

Once into Linux, you can start terminal by going to System Utilities or something like that.

Talking about dependencies, that's the inherent problem with RPM based distros like Fedora Core and Mandriva. It's the main reason why I can't wait for Gentoo on the PS3 - Portage kicks major ass.

Depends on what you expect from it. For starters, expect the whole installation to take upwards of a couple of days. But once installed and setup, it's the most kickass distro. One of the main reasons is its package manager - Portage, which is much better than RPM which is used in Fedora Core 5.

While Gentoo has already been installed and does work on the PS3, I'm in talks with the guy to get some concrete instructions.

Either ways, expect a lot more info from me once we get our PS3 delivered (We haven't received it yet!)

You can change the resolution!

Edit /etc/kboot.conf and add a special parameter at the end of the kernel line:

linux="/boot/vmlinux-2.6.16 initrd=/boot/initrd.img video=ps3fb:mode:3"

Here's the full list of mode-ids
0: auto mode , default value
YUV 60Hz 1:480i 2:480p 3:720p 4:1080i 5:1080p
YUV 50Hz 6:576i 7:576p 8:720p 9:1080i 10:1080p
RGB 60Hz 33:480i 34:480p 35:720p 36:1080i 37:1080p
RGB 50Hz 38:576i 39:576p 40:720p 41:1080i 42:1080p
VESA 11:WXGA 12:SXGA 13:WUXGA

Just change the mode:X to reflect your resolution's mode-id. Reboot and it should use the new resolution settings. Give me a holler if it doesn't. I'll look for alternatives.

Hey a friend of mine said debian is a nice linux to use. She says it is easy and very stable so do you think we can try getting a debian port for ps3? Just giveing my 2 cents. Also this is amazing using the internet browser of the PS3 os to write this. I'm using a wireless mouse and a wired keyboard. (usb of course)

I have a few questions about Linux...please be patient with me...I am just learning this...

1. Will there be any way to return to the GameOS (XMB) after installing YDL 5.0? (or any otherOS)

2. If the answer to question 1 was no...Then how do you start your PS3 games up? and navigate your friends list and such?

3. Will YDL 5.0 be free around the holidays (I read that somewhere). When and if it is free, can I use a memory stick pro duo to install the bootloader and such.

you type 'boot-game-os' at a terminal and the ps3 will reboot to XMB (or hold power for 5 secs on boot)

Ok, cool...now I know this will sound like the biggest nub question ever...

but I have to ask it (I mean, I'm spendin 600 bucks here)...

Is it possible to brick your PS3 by doing something through Linux? Such as putting a Emulator or somthing on there?

Also. I plan to transfer the Bootloader and installation files, transfering them to my PSP, then using the Mem Stick Pro Duo (w/ files on it) to install it. Anyreason this shouldn't work?

And finally, Do I have to have a USB Mouse and Keyboard to use linux?

just a keyboard

Edit by Steve Ballmer:
You will need a mouse if you want to use Linux in GUI mode. While you can run Linux in command line mode, I'm sure that's not what he meant

1. How do I make the partitions on my 60gb playstation 3?

2. How do i erase the partitions in the hd and go back to default?

3. Will "restore default settings," erase everything (all the files) from the hd?

4. If I buy a hp wireless keyboard and mouse that comes with an installation cd would they work and be recognized by the ps3 and Linux without the cd.

As above. Just delete the partitions and create them again.

Probably not. That would mean that your savedata would be deleted too, which isn't something you want to do.

Don't think it will be supported. It's best to have a go though.

Is there no way to just have the Fedora DVD "boot" and then start the installation, as per normal?

Coming in a couple of hours. We just got our PS3 and are installing Linux

No. You need the special bootloader which is made by Sony specially for the PS3. Unlike a PC, the PS3 doesn't have a BIOS which would allow you to select the booting method. In the future, it might be possible to have a second bootloader which would allow you to dual-boot between two Linux distros, but that's still speculation. For now, there's no other way.

The linux you're using is basically just the standard PPC version right? Does this mean it only has access to the PPC in the Cell and not the 7 SPE's?

It supposedly has access to the SPEs, or it will have support in the future. Kawanishi, one of the Sony executives, in an interview, said that they will make sure that all the hardware is supported in Linux.

Besides, Cell will be used a lot in supercomputers, so it's not like Sony cease development and the platform will die.. Expect some more stuff in the future, maybe even with YDL.

i think i may have found an interesting discovery, if the that video on the front page showing us the linux on his 60gb ps3, then i think that means the 60gb is faster then the 20gb because my 20gb version seems to be slower running linux then that of the one on the front page

Do you think it would be possible to create our own custom OS's and run them on the PS3?
