3 quick questions....

1. Can I use Sony's Game-OS (XMB) as the default system...and then (while booting the PS3 up) hold power for 5 seconds to boot up linux? I know that you can have Linux default and hold 5 seconds on boot up Sonys Game-OS, but is it possible to do it the other way around, with Sony's OS being default.

2. When will Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 be available? Will it be free?

3. If I install Fedora Core 5 on my PS3, and then want to change to YDL 5.0...how would I go about removing Fedora Core 5?

thanks for answering my questions.

Nobody is stopping you from making an entirely new Linux distro. I won't help you though

Nope. The 5-second power button trick is there so that however messed up your Linux install gets, you can simply boot back into the Main OS and fix it by reformatting your partition. There's no way they would allow you to override that thing.

Before January I think. Yes, it will be free.

Just format your Linux partition from the Game OS and install YDL in whatever way it has to be installed. We'll see more info as YDL approaches release date.

uh oh..........it didnt work, i changed it to mode 3 and it wont load up now, it just loses the picture. So now what? do i re-install linux?

you gotta do this... restart your ps3 when it gets to the kboot you must start typeing before 5 seconds or something and put in kboot:
Code:
/boot/vmlinux-2.6.16 initrd=/boot/initrd.img
this will boot with normal video then you can edit /etc/kboot.conf and take the vid mode off.. i did the same mistake

Is there a simple directory somewhere containing a vast number of already-compiled Fedora applications? I know that I can download source, but have no experience compiling. I tried the opensource directory, but nothing specifically said it was flavored for FC5. If it works with Linux (as a platform listing) am I just universally good to download the binaries and install?

As soon as I get the wi-fi internet connection and pixel-per-inch problems resolved, I'm planning on cranking up the Apache Web Server and putting up a few 'Powered by PS3' how to first linux user guide pages.

A listing or directory of apps would help that go a long way. Thanks in advance for responses!

Compiling instructions
  • Make sure you're logged in as root while installing stuff
  • Download source code. Should be in bz2 or gz format
  • tar -zxvf <name of source file>
  • You can press Tab key for auto-completion.
  • Once it extracts, type ls
  • It will show you a list of directories.
  • Navigate into the newly created folder by typing cd <directory name>
  • You can press Tab key for auto-completion.
  • Once inside that folder, what you will have is the source code.
  • Type ./configure
  • Bunch of scrolling text will be shown. If everything's proper, you shouldn't have any errors. That step will configure the compiling instructions according to the Linux environment (In our case, FC5 running on PS3)
  • After that, type make
  • That will compile the app. It could take a while depending on the size and complexity of the code. If you didn't get any errors, you can now install it!
  • Install the application by typing make install
  • That should install the application in the correct folders.

Once installed, you should be able to run it using the command line and typing in the name of the program. So if you installed an app called from the archive beebeeps3-1.7.tar.bz2 and the name of the app is beebeeps3, try typing in beebeeps3 to run that app.

As always, use the autocomplete to make it type longer names for you .
To uninstall an app, just go to the source folder where you just typed make install, and type make uninstall.
That will uninstall the application.

You might have compilation errors with certain programs. List them here and I'll try to see what can be done . Don't overdo it though...I want to live longer

Is Fedora Core 6 able to run on PS3?
And what are the differences between 5 and 6 as far as running on the PS3. Are there any features that 6 has, that won't run on the PS3? Any reason why 5 is recommended instead of 6?

I've installed it, but getting screen resolution issues. Well more of an image issue, I can make out pictures or text, but I know it's running, I can move the mouse and see distorted windows in the background.

I'm assuming it's resolution issues from the previous posts, and I've also read your #40 on changing the modes. I am currently using a HDMI connection, what does that fall under?

After installing Fedora Core, open /etc/kboot.conf in any editor.
You will see a part of the line. Add the rest on that line and save that file..

Not sure. Try "Allot 10GB for Other OS". Maybe it won't format..I'm not very sure about this..

That step is supposed to be done after you've installed, rebooted and logged into Fedora Core 5. Don't try to change resolutions before you've got everything installed.

Once installed, just open up any editor in FC5 and edit /etc/kboot.conf
