using Mplayer i use Frame Dropping, and it helps with the stalling

you can probably find that on VLC, hope it helps

Default Can't get into FC5

Hi all, I've installed FC5 on a UK 60Gb PS3 with 10Gb allocated to OtherOS and the Add On CD then chosen my root password. However after a reboot I'm still left at the kboot prompt.

Typing startx gives the error /init: eval: 1: startx: not found

Same thing happens with ps3videomode. I was under the impression that the kernel should be compiled after this stage and then Fedora will load.

Not sure if this will matter but I pressed y too early when I first inserted the add on CD and so it failed to read it. So I re-installed FC5 figuring that the installer would format sda.

Any help and pointers much appreciated.

It can't see the linux partition. Create it again from the XMB.

You're typing that at the kboot prompt, which won't work since kboot is just a bootloader, not a full-blown distro in itself.

Wait for some time, there might be a delay before it boots FC5.

Default Yellow Dog 5.0 on PS3 1.6

HI

I can not install Yellow Dog 5.0 on my PS3 with update 1.6

I have partitioned the drive etc and burnt the iso image. However once i get to the first graphical screen i click on NEXT and it simply hangs.

If i use the Text version it gets all the way upto the install after the language settings than it shows an error reporting thet the cd can not be unmounted.

I am at a loss

Left it for a few mins, nothing. It's all installed so there must be a way to load Fedora from the kboot prompt.

Failing that i guess I'll try another distro, I don't want to install FC5 again.

Tell us more. What do you mean you cant do this command? Are you typing it in correctly? Whats it saying when you type it in? Are you following the guide exactly as it is written? If you are you shouldnt have a problem.

Are you talking about linux? If so ya it works on 20gb ps3 but it can only allot 10gb for linux leaving like 7gb for your PS3 XMB OS which isnt much.

Steve,
I've got what sounds like exactly the same problem as you - see my post :
http://forums.qj.net/f-ps3-linux-283...ml#post1496978

Havent found a solution yet but will let you know if i do - can you glance at my screen pics to see if they look similar to what you see when it hangs.

Thanks,
Kev.

Stop spaming this thread man if you got a question about linux then ask it or try to help people. Ya my comment wasnt about linux but I have already helped people with linux and actually posted stuff on topic and didnt just go to this thread to post needless spam.

By editor he means anything that can edit text. I have gentoo so not sure if its the same but with gentoo you would put what cyanide said in the terminal so type this code into the terminal
Code:
/etc/kboot.conf
then this will come up:

(putting it in code so its easier to read)
Code:
kboot.conf
# The following is an example kboot configuration file. Edit it
# to suit your needs before attempting to reboot your system or
# you may be unable to boot the new install.

# default: the default kernel label to boot should the user not make
# a selection. Uncomment the following line and set a default kernel label.
default=Gentoo

# timeout: number of seconds to wait for user input before the default
# kernel label is booted. Uncomment the following line and set timeout.
timeout=10

# The format from this point on is within a kernel label. At a minimum,
# you must pass the kernel and root device. The syntax is as follows:
#
# label='device:<path_to_kernel> initrd=device:<path_to_initrd> kernel_options'
#
# You should also pass the video options as well. An example of video
# options are as follows:
#
# 480i = ps3fb:mode:1
# 576i = ps3fb:mode:6
# 720p = ps3fb:mode:3
# 1080i = ps3fb:mode:4
# 1080p = ps3fb:mode:5
#
# You can review all possible video modes using the ps3videomode application
# provided by the ps3pfutils package. i.e. ps3videomode -v will display
# possibilities.

# The following is an example kernel label. Uncomment and edit as needed.
Gentoo='sda1:/boot/kernel-genkernel-ppc-2.6.16-ps3 initrd=sda1:/boot/initramfs-genkernel-ppc-2.6.16-ps3 root=/dev/ram0 real_root=/dev/sda1 init=/linuxrc video=ps3fb:mode:8 rhgb' (replace video=ps3fb:mode:<required mode id>
Edit this to change the display. One of the lines in your kboot.conf file should have ps3fb:mode:[place the number here that corresponds to your tv 5 for 1080p, 3 for 720p etc]

Taken from here http://ps3wiki.qj.net/index.php/Gentoo_Howto#kboot.conf. This link might help tho its about gentoo.

Is it true that no versions of linux (Fedora Core, YDL, Gentoo) have support for the PS3s wifi card? If so, i'm not going to bother getting linux if i have to get a dam cable through the house

Yup its true no linux distro's for the ps3 have wifi support. Tho linux is still worth it ps3's web browser is just as crappy as the psp one.

Is there anyway to get Gentoo running in 1080p? I have the kboot.conf file set to 1080p but it stays at 1688x964 or something like that. I saw a topic about this awhile ago but no solution was given. Can this be fixed?

I guess that's a major disadvantage of having linux for PS3
Do you think there will be support for the PS3s Wifi in the near future on any type of Linux distro?

Ya probably but only for YDL. Its not a problem at all for me since I need to have a ethernet cord in my room anyway for my gaming pc+360 so I just plug it in on on my ps3 when running linux.

You can use wireless with any Linux distro on the PS3, you just need some extra hardware. You can buy a wireless game adapter from linksys. I'm currently using a game adapter from linksys on my PS3 to connect to my wireless network and it works perfectly. The PS3 doesn't heat that much anymore and I definitely get a better signal than the the PS3's integrated card gives me. If you are considering going wireless with linux on your PS3 that is your only choice unless you want to wait a while until sony releases some drivers for the devs to use.

Hi, i have installed FC5 full and i noticed that i only have 1.1GB free. There is aload of crap installed that i dont even want such as the multipul media players and useless image tools and i would like to get rid of them.

Is there any way to remove them? I have tried the add / remove programs bit in the menu but whilst getting the list of installed programs i get an error.

Is this going to be a long and complicated commandline session to remove each and every1 of them manually or is there some other, easy GUI trick i can use?

Thx
