http://gentoo-portage.com/Browse Alot of apps for linux at that link. If they say ppc next to there name then it work with linux on your ps3.

I get the error /init: /etc/kboot.conf: 9: syntax error: unterminated quoted string. I was editing the last file of the kboot.conf to change the display settings to 1080i because that is what my tv supports but when I was typing :exit I forgot the : and I edited something else I thought I deleted what I had typed but maybe not or deleted too much, can someone give me a step by step guide to fixing this problem please.

Well, I'm not sure if this works with YDL, but since you quoted Gentoo on your post I'll give you this guide to fix your kboot.conf HERE.

Could someone please help me out here?
I have just finished my 2nd install of linux fedora core 5 on my ps3(1st install would not work).
Everything starts up as normal after login in ,i type startx to begin but all i get everytime is a black screen ??.

I havent a clue im new to linux...

Ack! can someone help me please, i'm just in the middle of installing linux, and my ****ing keyboard isn't working, it's connected properly because the backlight luminates, but nothing appears when i try and type, and i need to enter the root password, i'm really annoyed now because i have to walk down to the shops and get a different USB keyboard

When you type in your root password nothing is shown its not your kb thats how linux works. So just type in your root password(it wont show up but it will be there) and hit enter.

still nothing, i don't think it's working, i type something in and click "next" but keeps coming up with i need to type in a password and confirm it, i'm stuck now

does the ps3 wifi work with fedora core 6? or would i need ethernet cables to be able to use firefox ect and not the wireless? cause if not i mine as well stop downloading it now and try the YDL with wifi...

Hey sinfulfate, that link you gave me with all those apps, when you say it needs to have PPC next to it, do you mean PPC on it's own or like this:

Like that. So something that says "ppc x86" it means it will work on ppc and x86 linux distros.

EDIT: I hear MAME works online so get that and we can play.

Last question, hopefully, is there any way to run YDL with a regular SCART cable, because i go to two different houses from time-2-time and now i'm stuck here with no HDTV, so i was wondering if i can still use Linux here?

I use Gentoo so I dont know much about YDL but i know there alot of talk about getting YDL working on a non HDTV search you might be able to find your answer sorry I couldnt help =/

what the hell....when i start my ps3 up it says login: and then password: and im 90% surei never set oine up...so how do i set one up and get onto the damn thing? (FC6)

I think you have to set a password for all linux distros(not sure tho) but I know you have to for Gentoo and YDL. Setting up the password should have happened during the install if you did it correctly. Login should be root and password should be whatever you made it.

EDIT: This is what he said in the guide to install it.

if i cant get into linux, is there a way i can get back into the game os?

type in boot-game-os or hold the power down for 5seconds. When you type in a password on linux nothing shows up but its there.

damn it...so now my password is some random letters of password...then stuff after it....and theres nothing i can do about it cause i dont have the option to type in comands like that says to

Hold the power button down for 5 seconds it will reboot to the Game OS. Im not sure if you can change your linux password now might need to re install it.

if im gonan re install it and re format my hdd, is there any pure custom ways to?
cause i want more than just 10 for linux..but more than just 10 for ps3 and you only have 3 options...

Nope can only allot 10gb for linux and the rest for the XMB or 10 for the XMB and the rest for linux sucks I know.

owell..off to reformat and wait about...idk i think it was 4 hours..it might be more though to install it...started it last night at 9 fell asleep at 11:45 or so and it was only 83%...gues i got a bit of a wait

i didnt know linux took that long to install on the ps3... which is the best distro in your guys thoughts? because i want to install it on mine but am not sure if i should i mean what is the advantage?

I like gentoo because its really easy to install apps. The advantages of linux is having a fully functional pc on your ps3.

OK, i finally got Linux up and running on an SD-TV, but when i install applications e.g. Snes9x, i cannot find them once they have been installed, any ideas?
