Is it/Will it be possible to install Windows or Windows games using Wine or Cedega and playing them on the PS3?
No and No. I'll explain...
Windows is mainly developed for x86 and x86-64 processors, the ones which are used in our PCs. The x86 or x86-64 are known as instruction sets. Similarly, the PS3's processor is a PowerPC processor. There is no way you will be able to install Windows on your PS3. No matter what anybody tells you, it's currently not possible, and do not expect to see that anytime. Onto games and Wine, again, it's simply not possible. Two reasons - Lack of graphics card drivers means that your games won't run, and if they do, it will be a slideshow . Secondly, again, Wine and Cedega is incompatible with the PowerPC architecture. Their code contains some assembly code which is specific to the x86 arch, and as such, there's no builds for other arches.

After installation and rebooting the PS3, all I see is a command line with a kboot prompt. How do I get a GUI interface?
Type in startx to load the X GUI interface. You will either see have Gnome or KDE.

I am confused about one thing. If PowerPC Linux works, would it be possible to install OSX with OtherOS Installer?
Linux works because drivers for the PS3 have been made. AFAIK, OSX-PPC development is pretty much dead. If you don't have drivers, you can't run the OS, simple as that.

I also would like to know if Fedora Core 5 is the only distro you can install. I like Kubuntu a lot more.
Fedora Core 5 and Gentoo are confirmed working. Other distros should work fine though it will take a little experimentation.

Also should it matter if the distro is for 32 bit ppc or 64 bit ppc like gentoo?
Unlike the x86/x86_64 arch, there isn't a distinction in the PPC arch. I'm not too familiar with it so I won't go into much detail, but suffice to say that all PPC Linux distros will work. The source for the stuff inside the Addon CD has been released and it has already been possible to install Gentoo using this method.

Is it possible to brick your PS3 by doing something through Linux? Such as putting a Emulator or somthing on there?
No.

Also. I plan to transfer the Bootloader and installation files, transfering them to my PSP, then using the Mem Stick Pro Duo (w/ files on it) to install it. Will it work?
Should be fine.

Do I have to have a USB Mouse and Keyboard to use linux?
The answer depends on what you want to do with it. For command line only, a keyboard should be fine. But for most people here, yes, you should use a mouse since you will be working in a GUI environment.

How do I make the partitions on my 60gb playstation 3?
Settings -> System Settings

How do i erase the partitions in the Hard Disk and go back to default?
As above. Just delete the partitions and create them again.

Will "restore default settings," erase everything (all the files) from the Hard Disk?
Probably not. That would mean that your savedata would be deleted too, which isn't something you want to do.

Changing Resolution:
Edit /etc/kboot.conf using any editor and add a special parameter at the end of the kernel line:

linux="/boot/vmlinux-2.6.16 initrd=/boot/initrd.img video=ps3fb:mode:3"

Here's the full list of mode-ids
0: auto mode , default value
YUV 60Hz 1:480i 2:480p 3:720p 4:1080i 5:1080p
YUV 50Hz 6:576i 7:576p 8:720p 9:1080i 10:1080p
RGB 60Hz 33:480i 34:480p 35:720p 36:1080i 37:1080p
RGB 50Hz 38:576i 39:576p 40:720p 41:1080i 42:1080p
VESA 11:WXGA 12:SXGA 13:WUXGA

Just change the mode:X to reflect your resolution's mode-id. Reboot and it should use the new resolution settings. Give me a holler if it doesn't. I'll look for alternatives.

I'm sure someone will ask: "Where do you get the files necessary for it?". Personally, I know where, but I think you should add it

sweet, i finally got it up and running. I didn't know that firefox came already installed with the linux os lol.

New question, how would i install a linux application, like aim, vlc player, etc. i have the linux version aim and vlc player files on my computer but not on the PS3. Could someone possibly write a step by step tutorial? i've looked for some online but i couldn't quite understand it.

A big note to QJ about the tutorial they made about installing it, I thought they meant i would have to partition one half for my ps3 then click on partition for other os afterwards but if you do that it wont work properly or at all for that matter. So i had to do a restore ps3 system or whatever that option was and then i ONLY clicked on allot 10gb for other os. If you click allot 10gb for ps3 and allot 10gb for other os it wont work at all, so ONLY click on allot 10gb for other os.

Please keep the actual discussion in another thread. Make one if you have to. I'd prefer it if this thread was there to only ask for help, or clarify something specific.

I'm asking the person who actually tried it and got it working. I'm sure we would all like feedback about it.

Currently, you can surely install Fedora Core 5 and Gentoo. I'm in talks with the Gentoo guy to get some proper instructions .

Apart from those two, I don't see why other distros shouldn't work. It's just a matter of someone giving it a go and documenting it properly.

I assume its the 64bit version you want as the PPC in the cell is 64bit.
