I've been trying to run X as a normal user instead of root.
I've created a user with: adduser -G users, wheel, games -s /bin/bash username then setting a password with passwd. But whenever I login with that user and use startx, the XFree86 server loads and controls the video and mouse, but nothing executes. I can't get it to run either GNOME or KDE. I've set the DESKTOP environment variable to "GNOME" and tried entering it into /etc/sysconfig/desktop, but I still can't get it to work. Any ideas? |

I was about to say what TornSoul said. why would anyone run X as root, wow i'm glad ps3 has dumped a fresh wave of n00bs into linux, let the phishing attacks begin.
u should be able to do all the user stuff via gnome. did you edit gdm.conf so that the other user has a desktop environment? |
