Default Not sure which distro to use.

I've never used Linux before, and I was wondering what would be a good beginners distro that would work on my PS3. My friend told me Unbuntu (I think that's what it's called) was a good one to start with, but I'm not sure if that will work with PS3.

Also, I'd like a second opinion on whether it's good for beginners or if my friend is just messing with me.

I should be getting my 120gb hdd tommorow, and I still haven't figured out what I'm going to be using.

Suse is very user friendly. Later on, consider mandrake or red hat.
But yes, Ubuntu is easy too.

I also heard Gentoo was easy, but have no experience with it.

so far gentoo and fedora core 5/6 are the only distros you can install so I would go with gentoo because its slightly harder to install, but is easier after that for installing stuff,ect...

In Gentoo you have to compile everything from source and is heavily based on using the command line if I'm not mistaken. It's not for newbs.

thats what everyone says but gentoo was my first distro, its a freakin huge learning curve and an install booklet like a dictionary but you'll know your stuff after that. takes about 2 days to install haha. but yeah overall not for firstimers

ps compiling x on a 500mhz machine= no fun.

Why not just dual boot linux on your PC and save yourself a few hundred dollars?

I thought we could install an PowerPC enabled distro? Was that changed? Also, with YDL being released today, how does that compare to Fedora Core in terms of difficulty?

you can install a ppc distro. ydl and fedora are probably pretty similar in terms of the learning curve. despite what you've heard linux isn't really that hard to use.
