Fedora core is allright. It sucks if you don't have a hidef tv though. The operating system doesn't even fit all the way on the tv.

As for sound, it runs nicely. I managed to tweek the settings on snes9xpress and got ninja gaiden trilogy to run almost full speeed with perfect sound.

Yes, but only for paid members. And that's about $60 IIRC.

Almost ?

I thought it'd at least be able to emulate a NES/SNES perfectley....

Also, for anyone that has this, I am wondering if it recognizes all of the PS3's SPE's ?

I know fedora only recognizes 2 3.3 ghz processors...

Fedora and YDL both recognized the SPE's. Look at the loading screen next time when you load FC5. The 2 big penguins are the two 3.2 cores and the little penguins are the SPE's. I have YDL and it has 2 big penguins and 6 small penguins so 2 cores plus 6 spes are recognized.

Nice thing about YDL is the speed of doing normal stuff compared to FC5 and the E17 desktop manager. I like the shortcut bar it reminds me of a mac.

tomei, is it worth paying for YDL now?
How many ps3 specific tweaks have been done in YDL?
Do they have good video and sound codec support built in (would I be able to play xvid, etc without compiling or installing mplayer/vlc/etc myself)?
How much ram free do you have to play around with right after starting your X desktop?
Oh yeah, and how big is the YDL distribution?

thanks!

Not really. There are already torrents and it is posted to newsgroups. I think they tweak it for the PS3 because it is faster than FC5. There are not codecs installed you have to install them yourself. I'll give you the ram specs when I start up YDL. One negative is it takes longer to load up YDL compared to FC5 but after the load its faster in general tasks. The YDL distribution is 3.3 gb.

*Edit Here is an screenshot of the cpu info and ram usage after first boot on.

My last post showed the same thing you posted. I will quote from the YDL 5.0 Install.pdf

Quote on the Booting Up! part

"3. Two YDL icons will appear in the upper left corner of your screen. These represent the PowerPC processor present on the PPU (Primary Processing Units) of the PS3 Cell CPU. Shortly thereafter, 6 smaller penguins will appear, each representing one of the SPUs (Synergistic Processing Units). There are 8 in all, 6 of which are available to Linux on the PS3."

Thanks for the info and screenshot tomei. They were really helpful. I'm gonna give ydl a try and see how it compares before spending more time tweaking my current setup.

Does wifi work with YDL? I've been trying to get a wireless network connection with Fedora core 6 without any success. I'll switch to YDL if it will solve my problem.

i have ydl and it is much better than fedora core. It is just my opinion but believe me, I tried many things with fedora core and YDL has me all smiles compared to fedora.

Note that I am currently connected using component cables to a non-hdcp enabled monitor, and fedora core would not output high res even using the component cables. YDL used 720p right from the start and I'm having absolutely NO loading time problems when running any application, while fedora was slow with most things.

I got vlc running with fedora after many hours of trial and error, and I have yet to try to get it running on YDL. I'm not very hopeful right now, since it is a new distribution and compiling the vlc source is way out of my league. Suffice it to say if I get vlc and wifi running, I will be one happy yellow puppy.

YDL does not support wifi at this time.

They also state CD playback and ripping does not function, and Bluetooth devices are not easily enabled and considered unsupported.
