Default FC5 and sound quality

I'm getting absolutely horrible sound quality from my FC5 install. Optical out to Onkyo Receiver. Playing PS3 games on it it sounds great, just when I play any audio in inux it comes out like crap. I haven't changed anything in the audio setup. Any suggestions on cleaning the sound up?

Thanks

What application are you having issues with?
Sound works fine for me (in both Fedora Core 5 and YellowDog) (I'm using my own recompile of mplayer, vlc and mpg123 and they all work fine).
The only thing that's not working is 5.1 sound in linux and in the in-built xmb movie player. (It works fine in games and playing dvd's).

My ps3 audio output is going through optical into my Yamaha receiver and the receiver shows it's getting a PCM stereo signal.

Any movie player and any CD player. Movies I at least understand what is being said, but it "sounds like the volume is set WAY too high and the voices crack and such. CD Audio is 100% unrecognizable. LOiterally just garbled mess coming out of my speakers.

Default Just in case

Just for reference, I had to play with my sound drivers in my applications to get the sound to come out right. Xmms sounds great after switching to Oss driver, and vlc needed no changes, it ran fine without config. Xine still sounds bad, even set to oss driver, but I'll probably try and use vlc instead.

If you installed rpm's from all over the place (that wasn't specifically targetting the ps3) instead of compiling from source, it's possible that some of the rpm's have been built with options that are slightly incompatible with the ps3's.
