Hi.
I am one of those people who currently does not have a 720p monitors -- and have installed YDL Linux. I wanted to post some progress I'd made of getting around, and maybe there are some others who can chime in and hopefully getting a remote XDM type desktop windows running like I had in my PS2 Linux kit. Here is what I had done so far... I had completed a text based install and then booted the YDL via the ydl480p from kboot I noticed that sshd was part of the start up process, which is good news. Once the login screen (on the NTSC TV) is displayed, I ran putty and ssh'ed to the IP address of the PS3. If you need the IP address, try login to the web server of your router and see if it handed out an DHCP IP address that matches the PS3 MAC ID -- and use that as the IP address. Once I got ssh running, I was pleasantly surprised it let me login as root as SSH, but I'd take it ![]() next thing I did (so you don't mess around w/ root) is to add a user account so you can try to do stuff w/out it being root. useradd -d /home/newuser newuser (where "newuser" is your new user ID -- and creates a user home directory) next you do passwd newuser and set the password for the new user ID you just created -- now you have a user account you can hopefully run user program w/out being root. go ahead and log out of PS3 at this point. Next I ran xming on my PC and set it up w/out access control for x-windows server on my PC of IP 192.168.1.xxx:0 and have it ready (this assumes your PC and PS3 are on the same subnet) Once that's done, I ran Putty again (and do SSH) to login to PS3 using the new ID I just created. At the shell prompt, I ran export DISPLAY=192.168.1.xxx:0 (assuming that's the network where your other machine is located with the IP address of your ximg x-windows server) Once that's all done, I've tested out a few basic x-windows like: xterm & gaim & and they successfully created x-windows on my PC so I can still work on my VGA based monitor and not have to work within the confines of my NTSC TV My question is can someone from this point try to see if we could setup a remote X-windows desktop (VNC Server?) XDM? so we don't have to go buy an expensive DVI monitor or HDTV.. Please post steps in reply to this thread. Penguina Last edited by penguina; 12-04-2006 at 06:18 PM.. Reason: change title |

OK!
I'd made some more progress. There was few tricks I had to do to get E17 working on my Dell 17 inch laptop (1920 x 1200) First Set your display resolution lower than your max resolution (like 1920x1080) from Xming and select "One window" version, select "no client", and no access control, and a blank x-windows should pop up. now using putty and the export DISPLAY parameters to your IP of your local machine, and point it to the Xming xserver. Once you have this working, go to your shell in your putty and type the following.... nautilus & now, you can go ahead and go to the windows XP control panel and adjust your resolution to max resolution (1920x1200), now your full x-windows session on your PS3 will be just a bit smaller than full display on your screen, but still large enough to work on. and now go to your putty shell, and type enlightenment & and you should see your E17 stuff coming up. This is what the screen shot looks like E17 on my Dell E1705 laptop ![]() Pretty cool, eh? Now I don't need a HiDef TV or buy a new monitor for a while Penguina |
