Exclamation Unable to retrieve Software information...

Im trying with all my might to get the Snes9x Emulator to work. I got the RPMS for it, and they wont install. I always get "Unable to retireve Software information" OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Im using YDL, But since I didnt PURCHASE THEIR $120 ACCOUNT, I cant download the updates. I tried the rpm -ivh ....yadda yadda crap and it doesnt work. it says I need libstde++ or whatever and its missing or something.

I have googled this over and over again, and people that have this problem are having with with installing FC. I know YDL is based on FC, and I couldnt care less.

One thing I did screw up was the Yellowdog-base.repo file. I messed up the Base URL file, and I cant figure out how to get it back.

I read somewhere that its a DNS error.

SOMEONE, ANYONE, FOR THE LOVE OF LINUS TORVALDS, HELP ME!

Sorry about your luck. Looks like you might have to wait until Christmas when the official release comes out.

You probably didn't update your yum repo files. YDL messed up the files before they made the iso. The system is looking for updated rpms with the software manager. Follow this readme:

Pointing yum to YDL.net
Introduction

There was a small problem with the /etc/yum.repos.d files provided in the 20061127 ISO, in all 3 repos files, base was used as the
tag at the top of the files. Use the following file contents in each file to fix the bug, as well to configure YDL.net as your
yum server. Replace USERNAME and PASSWORD with your respective YDL.net enhanced username and password.

yellowdog-base.repo:

[base]
name=Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 Base
baseurl=http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@www.ydl .net/downloads/enhanced/yum/5.0/base/
#mirrorlist=http://www.terrasoftsolutions.co m/resources/yd50-base-mlist
enabled=1
gpgcheck=0
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY

yellowdog-extras.repo:

[extras]
name=Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 Extras
baseurl=http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@www.ydl .net/downloads/enhanced/yum/5.0/extras/
#mirrorlist=http://www.terrasoftsolutions.co m/resources/yd50-extras-mlist
enabled=1
gpgcheck=0
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY

yellowdog-updates.repo:

[updates]
name=Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 Updates
baseurl=http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@www.ydl .net/downloads/enhanced/yum/5.0/updates/
#mirrorlist=http://www.terrasoftsolutions.co m/resources/yd50-updates-mlist
enabled=1
gpgcheck=0
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY

*EDIT* If you don't have an YDL.net enhanced account, you can delete these files. They are under /etc/yum.repos.d/

Cool

Yo-

I am also getting the cant retrieve software information error a lot. I pops up when trying to start xchat, add/remove programs, and a few other things.

I dont want a ydlnet account because its like $60 for 6 months. Is that the only way i can get rid of these errors?

Also, I cant delete these files, i guess i need to log in as root to do that.... Man its fun figuring all this Linux stuff out.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Lightbulb Ok

Where did you find those libstde++ files please?

I logged in as root and deleted the files in the specified yum folder. Now my add remove programs works! Yay!

But, I didnt do anything about the listde++ files........ Should I find those and plunk them somewhere?

if all else fails you should be able to download a package CD and update your system from that, but it looks like you guys got it working.

When you installed linux, It asked for a ROOT Password. What you do is: When the login screen pops up at the start up of the system, type root as the login name. Then press enter. Then, Enter the ROOT password you set during the installation process. If you cant remember it, Then you are screwed and have to reinstall.
