Hi, im COMPLETLY new to Linux and have a (probably) dumb question im sure many of you can eaisly answer. Ive donwloaded and installed all i need to boot YDL up. At the initial kboot: prompt i tab through the choices to ydl480i because of my standard definition TV. Then it runs through somemore, similar to the start up, giving me [ok] after it tests whatever its testing.
This is where my trouble starts, it brings me to a screen that says: Yellow Dog Linux release 5.0 (phoenix) Kernel 2.6.16=200061110.ydl.1ps3 on an ppc64 localhost login:_ I dont remember making a login during installation. I started it before I went to work and came home to it to enter through a few text boxes that said it was complete. Is there a master login that I use to make a new one, or did I skip something during installation? Any help would be appreciated, thanks, sorry to waste any of your time with this simple problem. |

ok, ill try that now. Will I be able to veiw/edit a login name and password once I use the root name to log in?
-= Double Post =- Ok, i went to the reinstall and all it asked me for was a password, so I backed out and remembered my password. I put in Login: root and then me password but now it says: [root@localhost ~]# Now, im basically trying to get to the "desktop", what am I doing wrong? All im at is a black and white prompt. I dont have any Linux knowledge, but i managed to use some ancient DOS logic (which got me no where) and pressed tab a few times and it displayed 2000+ acceptable commands and i tried a few, like gaim and whatnot, but it said something about display. Basically, im missing another key step here, and its probably another simple one. -= Double Post =- in the .pdf that came with the YDL 5.0 DVD it says that you create a system user before it boots up to the GUI, maybe thats what I need to do? The .pdf dosent explain how to go about doing this with a Standard Def TV, since i am just using the 480i/text mode of installing. Does this help anyone? I'm having the same problem myself. It would seem like all of the guides are written for people with HDTV's.
Any help on the matter would be great. I'll keep searching for more guides, myself. If I find anything I'll let You know. -= Double Post =- I haven't tried this out yet. But it seems to be what we need. It's written down on the first post http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/gen...2149278&page=3 I'm about to go try it now

as for installing it on a SDTV it will work but you need to get a patch from terrasoft's webpage (here are the instructions from the webpage)
1. At the "localhost login" prompt, enter "root". Press [ENTER] 2. At the root password (this was set during installation) and press [ENTER] 3. Via the command line interface which you have just entered, download the Xautoconfig program: wget http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/su....ydl.2.ppc.rpm [ENTER] 4. Install this RPM: rpm -ivh Xautoconfig-0.23-2.ydl.2.ppc.rpm [ENTER] 5. Type Xautoconfig and press . This will set up the parameters necessary to run a graphical system. 6. Edit the file /etc/inittab. Look for the line that reads: id:3:initdefault: ... and change it to: id:5:initdefault: 7. Edit the file /etc/kboot.conf and change the line that reads: default=ydl ... to ... default=ydl480i 8. Reboot your system: reboot [ENTER] Your system will now start by default into a low resolutions graphical mode. /instructons to edit a file you have to type editdiff filepath/filename to insert text or change text you need to type i then make change, then hit esc to stop editing once you are done editing the file type :qw then [ENTER] hope it helps Ok, I managed to follow this, I think the download was succesfull, but when I type Xautoconfig it gives me a bad command message. If i get a response on the gamefaqs board ill post together the steps of installing it all in one post. -= Double Post =- i skipped the installation step for the RPM, "Install this RPM: rpm -ivh Xautoconfig-0.23-2.ydl.2.ppc.rpm [ENTER]" Im going to try again now.
