INSTALLATION OF YDL 5.0 ON PS3 USING A STANDARD DEF TV
STEP BY STEP EVEN THE VILLAGE IDIOT SHOULD UNDERSTAND Do exactly as I say here step by step and you should get YDL installed on your PS3 with a standard TV. Make sure your network settings are set up with a wired connection and it works. 1. Set up your PS3s by partitioning the HDD for another OS and copy the 2 installation files needed from a USB drive, or memory stick, or whatever. download otheros.self from www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/ and download otheros.bld from http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/ put them in PS3/otheros so the PS3 will recognoze them. 2. Obtain the YDL any way you want, pay for it, obtain the .iso from downloading and burn it to a DVD using whatever program you want, borrow from a friend, whatever. 3. Insert the DVD and turn on the playstation 3. Youll see it boot up some computer mumbo jumbo and it will eventually reach a prompt that looks like this; kboot: at this point you can press the tab key to cycle through your command options or just type installtext, like this; kboot: installtext 4. Follow the installation instructions. It will, at one point, ask you to make a password for your root login. Remember it. Once instalation is complete your almost done. You can remove the disc. 5. Once it reboots it will reach the kboot: prompt again, this time tab through untill you see ydl480i or ydltext, either one will work, then press enter. kboot: ydl480i 6. This will run through more computer booting information and lead you to a prompt that looks like this; localhostlogin: this is where you need to log in. type root; localhostlogin: root then enter the pasword you created during installation; localhostlogin: root password: _ now you will be told your logged in and ready for the next step. 7. youll need to download a file to install to run your YDL on your standard TV, to do so type this exactly; wget http://www.terrasoftsolutions.co m/support/solutions/ydl_5.0/Xautoconfig-0.23-2.ydl.2.ppc.rpm EXACTLY. You will then download the file, it should be quick. 8. Once its finished downloading you need to install it by typing this; rpm -ivh Xautoconfig-0.23-2.ydl.2.ppc.rpm then it will install that file. Almost done. 9. The next step is to edit two files. type this to do so; editdiff /etc/inittab a lot of text will appear that you can scroll through with the aarow keys. You'll need to find the line that reads; id:3:initdefault: to edit it, press the 'i' key. Now you can enter in new text and delete old text, change that line so it says; id:5:initdefault: once you are done changing it you need to press ESC. This will stop you from editing. now type; :exit to return to the original prompt. You can type that anywhere, as long as you hit ESC. Now you need to edit the second file, type this; editdiff /etc/kboot.conf find the line that reads; default=ydl and change it to say (by pressing 'i' again) default=ydl480i and return to the prompt (by pressing ESC and typing :exit). Now that your at the original prompt type; reboot Guess what? Your done. If you followed those steps once it restarts it will load up to the GUI and ask for your login name and password again (root and whatever you made). Now its up to you to do what you want, you probably want to make a new user login or something, I dont know, Im just writing this so you know how to install it. Remember, dont ask stupid questions, read before you post, and try and explain yourself clearly. |

The package is already installed if you install via the retail DVD.
I made the changes, but now when it boots up, all I get is a black screen. =( It starts up, gets to the kboot prompt, then I let it boot to the default. The screen blinks, then no more visual. The hard drive is going crazy for a bit, so it's booting, just not giving me visuals I imagine. |

After the very last step "reboot"....
It reboots to a black screen that just stays black. I have a chance to intercept in at the kboot, but if I just let it boot past that it goes black. The only thing I did notice is that at the end of each of the two "file edits" it said something about the file "seems empty, edit failed" but when I go back in the changes I made are still there. Any help please? |

regardless of everything else when it is all said and done and you reboot for the last time after successful installation, what does it boot to. For example the windows looking screen, another prompt, what? The directions say, "now your done!" Then what I get just a black screen.

everyone that has the blank screen problem, there is a step missing which causes this. yo need to run Xautoconfig. To do that just start it up in ydltext and then just type in Xautoconfig and then hit enter. Next time you reboot and boot it in ydl480i it will work perfectly.

insert this step between 8 and 9 like so
8. Once its finished downloading you need to install it by typing this; rpm -ivh Xautoconfig-0.23-2.ydl.2.ppc.rpm then it will install that file. Almost done. 8.5 The forgotten step: type "Xautoconfig" 9. The next step is to edit two files. type this to do so; editdiff /etc/inittab |

does anyone know how to get the file Xautoconfig-0.23-2.ydl.2.ppc.rpm onto the ps3 without downloading it directly as i don't have a wired connection and i tried plugging a ethernet connection into my computer which is connected to the interent wirelessly but it didn't work, so does anyone know how to get Xautoconfig-0.23-2.ydl.2.ppc.rpm and install it without downloading it say on a memorystick and i cant use a sd card as it has to be in fat32 format and my comptuer doesn't have a sd card reader so i cant format it to fat32 so i can't use a sd card to put the file on which i know you can use as it was in this tutorial: http://www.gamescentral.com/blogs/te...-your-ps3.aspx

first thanks for the great tutorial, first I got a blank screen but know not anymore
![]() ...but I've another problem when I boot YDL and I see the login GUI it's not in color but in black and white also when I boot YDL everything doesn’t have any color at all.when I did install Linux I gave the command ydltext, that give me colors for example at the boot up you saw green OK's. But know when I boot Linux the OK's are grey Does somebody know what I do wrong..? ps. Linux use only 3/4 from my TV resolution, when I go at the system setting from the normal PS3 OS it say that the TV resolution is 567i. So if somebody know to command to start fedora in 567i, please share. Thanks in advance |

Hi,
I've been following the guide in this post to install ydl on my ps3. I get past the first kboot prompt (and enter 'installtext'). Next i'm prompted to select language - which goes ok, then keyboard type - after selecting uk (or us - tried both) the window disappears and i'm left with a blue hole on the screen with a bit of green text in the background (looks like the traceback error that your meant to ignore) and nothing happens! Help any suggestions ? (BTW using an RGB connection to the TV in case it makes any odds) Tried restarting a couple of times but the same thing happens. |
