Iam going to buy some DVD-R's and a USB Keyboard and mouse tomorrow and Iam trying to decide which OS is the best? I already have YDL 5.0 Downloaded but There are still 2 other options Fedora Core, or Gentoo. Which out of those 3 are the best and why, whats the advantages? I have been reading around and still can't decide.

YDL install is easier if you begin, as it's either graphical or the text install still have a Wizard-kinda menu and it automatize the installation. Fedora, I haven't tried it yet on the PS3, I've been trying to download it but it keeps crapping on me (still trying as we speak). Gentoo is reliable although a bit harder to install. After, using portage, it's easier to get programs, install and execute them. The only with Gentoo is that it doesn't use RPM natively, and so, most things you'll want might need to be compiled and the compilation process can take a while depending on what you want to do. I say, if you start with Linux, go with YDL but if you look for something reliable go with Gentoo. YDL is just easier because you can download things in their binary format compressed in an easy-to-install format (RPM). I wish I could help you more with Fedora (which also uses RPMs) but unfortunatly, I am not yet using it (although this is my distro of choice on PC). Hope this helps you a bit.

In case you haven't tried YDL yet. I installed that first, but found it wasn't what I expected and almost gave up using Linux on the PS3. I then luckily came across the Gentoo on PS3 post by cyanide and haven't looked back!
To me what's better about Gentoo is: 1. The install only installs the bare minimum whereas YDL just throws a ton of crap on the hard drive 2. As I've been playing with Gentoo, I've come across software I need. I then use the --search option with the emerge command and have always found what I'm looking for. I then just type 'emerge [package name]' and it downloads, compiles and installs the software. It doesn't get much easier. 3. Even if it's not the case, I feel I have been able to customize Gentoo more to my liking. |
