INstalled Yellow Dog 5 but having problems with the viewing size

hey guys, i just installed yellow dog 5 sucessfully. i dont know much about computers but everything seems to work EXCEPT i am not getting full screen size. it doesn't display the full size, i have about an inch of void space all around. i have a viewsonic hd 32" lcd and i tried adjusting the setting for screen format....16:9 wide 1 wide 2, full, normal etc and no luck. is there something i need to do? i have a japanese 20gb ps3 connected to my lcd via HDMI cable. when i switch to some other input mode like tv as opposed to hdmi (for ps3) i get a full screen. it is frustrating me plus the pic quality sucks like im using a lot less colors than i should

i'm not sure if theres a fix for that. the same thing happens for me on ydl and fedora core and i'm using a standard-def tv
