Default Another solution to the wifi problem on YDL

Like many people on this board, I was not able to run an ethernet cord from my wireless router to my ps3. Unfortunately, the built in ps3 wifi card is currently no supported by linux.

Luckily i have a computer(a laptop) that runs XP with wifi in the same room as my ps3. In addition, the ethernet port on my computer was not being used. So I ran an ethernet cable (it was a CAT 6, and I think it is a crossover cable) from my pc to my ps3's ethernet port which still works with linux.

First, I began by clicking properties on my wireless internet connection on my PC. Then, go to the advanced tab and check the box next to the phrase 'allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection'. After selecting this a pull-down menu should appear that lists your other connections. Select the connection referring to your ethernet port. The next box on the advanced tab states 'Allow other network users to control or disable the shared internet connection.' Im not sure if it makes a difference whether or not you select this box. I just checked it just to be on the safe side.

Basically what we just did in the first step was telling my PC to share its wifi connection via the ethernet port.

Next, I went over to my ps3 which is running YDL and opened the start menu and went applications-->system tools-->system config-->Network(network config). Once the network config menu comes up, select the ethernet port from the list, and then click activate at the top right of the menu. In addition when i edited the ethernet connection i selected Automatically obtain ip address settings with dhcp, and i wrote my computer's name in the hostname box. I also checked off the box for obtaining DNS info from provider. After doing all this, I checked my internet connection on my PS3, and everything seems to work fine.

So if you have a PC with wifi and a vacant ethernet port nearby your ps3 you can link them up to get the joy of internet on your linux-based ps3 without having to run a long ethernet cable all the way to your distant router.
