I use Gentoo. The install process is very simple. If you've install either any version of windows on your computer from scratch, then you can install Gentoo. Another limitation of YDL and other distros out there is that there really isn't an easy way to update your system to the latest and the greatest. It's a hair pulling experience (especially for noob). PS3 now has people using linux that do not even understand linux commands, let alone resolve dependencies, and properly install the apps. And if there's any changes to your system (based on need), then you must merge that change into the kernel, or wait few more months for an updated DVD image to come out. With the DVD, you'll have to reinstall. Or even with kernel modificiatons, you'll need to now figure out what impact that is going to have to the rest of your system. With Gentoo, you can update your entire system, automatically, including dependency resolution with a simple command 'emerge world', or 'emerge system' And best of all, since apps can be compiled automaticall and installed automatically, including all know depedencies, you'll have more optimized codes that is taylored to your hardware / or based on your preference (USE flags, and CFLAGS) Here are the pros and cons of Gentoo and YDL YDL. Enjoy a graphical install process, and spend many many hours trying to get anything to work right. Gentoo. learn how to setup via text prompt, and once up and running, everything just works automatically, no more dependency hell when trying to install an RPM package. Of course, this is just my opinion, and It also comes down to personal preference.... |

But YDL will probably be the first to get support specific to the PS3. Correct me if I'm wrong but it's the only distro that has support for the sixxaxis controller. I'm assuming it will be the first to get WiFi, GPU accelerated drivers, etc.
Of course, people should be able to adapt those to other distros but when, how often and how difficult it will be for those distros is unknown. Factor |

All linux distro are good. It's depend on what's your easy with. You know a pc reflect the user. if you are dumm then your pc will do nothing good. But if you are smart your pc will make awesome things. So for all the smart ones don't give up and your ps3 will be as powerful as Sony tell us! SUPERCOMPUTER!
PS: I use YUMEX in yld 5.0 and installations become as good as gentoo. |

Gentoo. Bigtime. I got Opera browser as well as VLC going with 0 grief. There is a wiki with step-by-step instructions on qj, you just look for the bolded text and type that. IMHO, text mode with specific instructions is no more difficult than a GUI installer. In fact, due to the fact that you can specify the exact input quite excplitly I prefer it.
Plus Gentoo just seems to run a hell of a lot quicker on the PS3 than did YDL. Also, it simply does not get easier than typing 'emerge <appname>'. |

I went the Gentoo route as well. With the stage-4 tarball, it made installation a breeze.
Of course, I already had a gentoo server that I had built FROM SCRATCH, so this install seemed much easier than my first. I like Gentoo because it is tailored - everything is compiled right then and there based on how YOU *want* it to run. I like the flexibility and the power of that. |
