See what I mean? You're having way too many problems. And as I've pointed out and suggested before, you're not following the directions. If you follow the directions, you wouldn't have these login issues.

In the Gentoo, install instructions, there is a section that walks you through setting up password for root. Open up your browser, go to the site where you see the gentoo install instructions and do a text search for 'passwd'

What the heck? How are you installing Gentoo? Are you installing it using the official stage4 tarball?, or are you installing it from scratch using only the liveCD? If you're installing it from scratch from liveCD, I can't help you.

You should be using the offical stage4 tarball, unless you really know what you're doing. If you follow the official instruction set with the official tarball, then you won't have these problems:

During my install process, there was no prompt that asked me for "login:"

You don't give up.... I like that (vigilance). My offer to walk you through it still stands. PM me with your phone number... It's only a 30 minute process. This way, you will get to enjoy Gentoo fairly quickly. I know how frustrating it can be when you're misguided, and trying to figure it all out on your own....

Wait... One more point of clarification: Are you talking about the login screen after Gentoo has been installed? If so, use root as userid, and whatever passwd you've set using passwd command during the install.

During the install, when you are setting the passwords, you are actually setting the password for ther user 'root'

Horray! PSPIMPIN is up and running on Gentoo!

Whew, felt like giving birth......(not that I know what that feels like)

Go tear up those linux codes PSPIMPIN!!

PSPIMPIN: Now that you're running Gentoo, and have portage configured, it is vital that you replace the /etc/make.conf file with the one that I sent you.

First, birng up a command prompt. Type su / password.

type: rm /etc/make.conf

While you're on root permission, type konqueror. Once the browser launches go to your email inbox, and download the file, and save it on /etc/

Now just to make sure you've got the file copied in the correct directory do this:

ls -l /etc/make.conf

if you see make.conf return, then you're set. You can now emerge VLC, MPlayer, xmame, gxmame, snex9x, or whatever else you want without worrying about getting the use flags correct. Since, I've done all that for you already, all you need to do now is 'emerge' , and enjoy.

Best of luck to you.

Great!
So now when I want to emerge something, do I still have to edit anything in the '/etc/portage/package.use' or the '/etc/portage/package.keywords'?
