This tutorial is for people who don't want to look around and like others do their homework for them (like me).
This tutorial will include step by step instructions on how to install Yellow Dog Linux 5.0 on your ps3 system. ![]() Materials/Downloads: -Yellow Dog 5.0 ISO (last file on the page): http://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/yellowdog/iso/ -Sony Bootloader: http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/manual.html -otheros.bld(its called theros.bld on the page): http://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/yellowdog/...wdog-5.0-docs/ -A USB keyboard(It can be wireless, it jus has to have a usb connector) -A USB Mouse(Same as keyboard) Pre-Installation Note! If you have already saved music, photos, movies, and save game data, back up all data before you continue. 1. Go to the Settings menu > System Settings > Format Utility > Format Hard Disk > Yes > Yes. 2. Then select a partition setting. Choose Custom. 3. You will see the option " Allot 10GB to the Other OS" or " Allot 10GB to the PS3 System". Choose Allot 10GB to the Other OS option. This will allow 10GB of your hard drive to the installation of linux. 4. You can choose to either do a full format, or a quick format. I chose quick format, because the full format takes about 2 hours. Quick format works fine. 5. Your PS3 will now format its internal hard drive. 6. When it is finished, press "X" on the sixaxis to reboot your PS3. Preparing a Memory Card, USB Drive, etc. You will need a Memory Stick Pro Duo, an SD card, Compact Flash, USB, or any type of optical media that the PS3 can read to install the bootloader installer, and bootloader that I included in the downloaded section of this post. 1. Your optical media must have at least 10MB of free space. 2. On the memory card, etc... create a directory called "PS3" (without the " ") 3. Inside the "PS3" directory, create a sub-directory called "otheros" (without the " ") 4. Save the bootloader installer with name otheros.self in the PS3/otheros/ folder. 5. Save the bootloader with the name otheros.bld in the PS3/otheros/ folder 6. Insert the memory card, USB drive, or other optical media into the PS3 7. Go to Settings > System Settings > Install Other OS 8. Your PS3 will now scan the memory card, USB drive, or optical media for the bootloader and bootloader installer. 9. Confirm the discovery of /PS3/otheros/otheros.self 10. Press "X" on the sixaxis to start the installation 11. The PS3 will now display this: "Other OS Installer Version x.y.z" choose start Then it will ask you to plug in your controller to the usb cord, do so now. Agree to the license agreement, and go throught with the installation Now restart your PS3 Installation of YDL 5.0t 1. Turn on your PS3 2. Insert the YDL DVD into the PS3 3. The bootloader kboot is displayed on-screen 4. Press TAB on your keyboard repeatedly to cycle through the 4 options: install, installtext, rescue, and rescuetext 5. Press Enter on the option you want to choose. If you do nothing for 10 seconds, then the bootloader will default to install. 6. Continue with the installation. 7. When it asks you for a "root password" choose something that will be easy to remember. The root password will be used to login as the user "root" Firstboot 1. Firstboot is just to configure all of your settings, so there no "real" instructions. Running YDL -After you are finished installing YDL 5.0, you will reboot your PS3, and the bootloader, kboot will run. This time, instead of choosing install, press TAB until you see the "ydl" option. Choose this. -If after you have done this, and your screen goes blank, restart your PS3, and when you see the "kboot", choose ydl1080i (hi-def tv), or ydl480i (standard-def tv), and it should work. NOTE: -(only for standard-def tv's) If after you run YDL, and you are on the command line, not the GUI, go to this website :http://www.gamescentral.com/blogs/te...-your-ps3.aspx |

And here is something extra after the tutorial...
![]() In that site lies almost every RPMs that have been reported as working on YDL including gnuboy, xmame, vlc, snes9x and a whole lot more. Just make sure they are from YDL or Fedora Core 5.

Actually... just get the whole folders for YDL and Fedora Core 5 and... install them all. Since you've gotten YDL 5.0 set up on your PS3, it should be fairly easy now as all you have to do is click on the RPM files and they'll be installed... just make sure to cycle through the whole thing carefully for any dependency thingies... like some RPMs require other RPMs to be installed first.
![]() By the way, there are also emulators, VLC and other goodies in there... including encoders for audio and video files, decoders, ummm... a few games for PPC. What you should do, though, is fpt-ing the folders down instead of clicking each and everyone of them in http mode.P/S: There are links on that site that will bring you to even MORE add-ons... I think there are well over a thousand in there. :P

I have tried to Download the YDL ISO file, but on my PC it says it's only about 670MB. What has gone wrong? Do I need to download it again?

Okay, so suppose i installed Yellow Dog Linux (I havent and need to know more before i do so). How would i install programs? I have heard of things called Fresh RPM's. What are they. Is it hard to install programs? Also can you install big programs like Itunes or AIM? Are there websites were you can download a file, and install it to the PS3 (i saw a topic on here saying that you need to make sure it's a PPC aricticure and it's not x84 or x86.
Sorry for all the question but i dont want to mess up during installation and i want to finish all my homewrok before doing so. -= Double Post =- Double post: AT anytime during the installion can i exit it and return to the XMB? How would i do that? Last edited by ak03; 03-20-2007 at 08:52 AM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

-= Double Post =- In yellow dog its yum install package for xmb its system-boot-ps3 though i might be wrong on that, RPMs are packages for OSes like YDL(yellow dog) and Fedora Core. on linux there is no aim but there is gaim which is much like aim. there is no itunes but there is VLC. During installation you can not exit to the xmb. Last edited by cooled; 03-20-2007 at 08:59 AM.. Reason: Automerged Doublepost |

You can. Just turn on the PS3 and hold the power button for 5+ seconds to boot the XMB.
I think you can also type "boot-game-os" when you start YDL.

Use a program like Nero and Burn the YDL Image (ISO) to a blank DVD.

can you link to a free version of it or anything else like this. And can it be a blank CD also. I'm new to burning things. What's better fedora core 5 or yellow dog 5 or Gentoo?
