PS3 loses 1080p "exclusivity"

Well it didn't take long for Sony to lose one of its most touted differentiators: 1080p capability. Today, Microsoft announced that they too will enable that rare and elite ability via a software update. It has been confirmed that this not only applies to the 1080p upscaling of 720p and 1080i sources, but to native 1080p HD-DVD playback and to 1080p game rendering. How many games will actually take advantage of that new feature on the 360 is anyone's guess, but I reckon it may be far fewer games than Sony has lined up for PS3 (I'd bet that Halo 3 will be on Micorsoft's 1080p list). Of course, this debate is moot unless you have have a display capable of 1080p images (which is less than 1% of 1% of all intelligent lifeforms in the universe).
While 1080p (jeez, how many times have I said 1080p in this single article?!) was a big feature for Sony's marketing department, would holding onto the "exclusivity" really have mattered in the end?
So maybe microsoft thought 1080p was a good idea after all....
