Default [Release] Music prx 0.50 (aka irsmp3.prx)

This is the new version of the irsmp3.prx which now has support for atrac3, which is why I changed the name.

If you don't know, this is a custom firmware plugin which allows you to play music while playing a game and using the vsh.

Read the file called PLEASE_READ_ME.txt, for installation and usage

I'm not going to copy the whole readme file here, but there a somethings you should know:

This has new hardware decoder will work with all umd games/the vsh/ and most homebrew. (Thanks to cooleyes)
    - It will not work with homebrew that uses the ME (SnesTYL ME, dosbox .71, etc)
    - It will not work with copy protected atrac3's
    - In the next release I'll have it switch back to the software decoder (mp3 only) when the ME is in use, but until then you'll have to use the non-ME version
    - Also when playing an mp3 that has a samplerate different from 44.1kHz, you need to pause the song before the vsh's video/music player will work

If you have a problem with a game starting, try waiting until you are at the main menu to start playing music.

If you get an error message/if you hit play and don't hear any music, turn on the on screen display, and look for a line in blue.

Please post the error message here along with a description of what you were playing.

    New in this release:
    0.5:
    - Added In Game mute
    - Added a HW decoder (thanks to cooleyes), which should make playback faster
    - Fixed various bugs, overclocking the vsh browser now works
    - Added wave atrac3 (*.at3) and sonic stage atrac3 (*.oma/*.omg/*.aa3) support (only with non copy protected files, but you should be able to remove copy protection with the newer sonic stage)
    - Added support for music copied to the psp using sonic stage (in OMGAUDIO)
    - Changed how the cpu is changed, it is now based on the current speed, even if some other program changed it
    - CPU + Mode settings are now saved, (if a game changes the cpu speed, it isn't saved, but if you change the speed it will be saved, also nothing
prevents a game from changing the speed after its set)
    - Added support for mp3's at samplerates != 44.1kHz
    - Added a loop current song button
    0.51: (beta)
    - Fixed a bug which would prevent playback in some games (You can now remove hw.prx, it is no longer used)
    - Since many people are reporting problems, I made this a "beta" version, I'll try and fix the bugs as soon as I can, see me last post in this thread for details
    0.52: (beta)
    - Fixed a bug which prevented some (I guess a lot) of atrac3 files from playing properly,
    0.53: (beta)
    - Fixed another bug making atrac3/atrac3 plus files not play, please update to this version before reporting any bugs, if you still have problems
    0.54 beta:
    - Removed the settings file because it was causing a problem
    - Added those settings into music_conf.txt
    - NOTE: In 3.40OE (and possibly other fws, setting the cpu speed > 222 will cause the vsh to not work/crash)
    - This seems fixed in 3.52 M33-2
    - Now that I think about it, the above might just be a problem with my one psp

    0.55:
    - Fixed a bug which would cause some mp3s to hang at the end of the file

    Future plans:
-auto enable the software decoder when the ME is in use, so playing mp3 can work with any homebrew that uses the me
    - improve the on screen display
    - add some sort of playlist in folder support (each subdir would be a seperate playlist and you can switch between them, something like DJEK was talking about in the old thread)
    - add more formats
    - figure out how to get pops mode working
    - have button inputs that are used in the prx ignored by everything else

Here is a link to the old thread http://forums.qj.net/f-psp-developme...ule-77235.html

@DJEK - I think I'll add something like that in a future release
@Korlithiel - I think the display as a button would get annoying, but it is added

    Thanks for fullfilling my request.

My main reason is simply because I don't mind having the screen off when starting music or changing my settings so I can hear the song skip. Since a lot of games use the remaining keys that was the only one I could think of to use as a sort of base.

Anyways thanks for the great update. Now to consider re-encoding my music into atrac3.

Well, this pretty much obsoletes the project I've been working on for the past month (not entirely, however). Oh well. It wasn't really working anyway (crashes galore! Can't figure out why...)

So the only thing I can think of to requast would be to allow users to adjust what clock speeds/bus speeds are available from the config text.
Not an importent feature but a nifty one for people like me who love to customize.

Lastly I'm including an edited Please Read Me file, I hope you don't mind but I made some edits for clarification (mostly adding in spaces and changed the format so that regardless of how large your notepad is screenwise it should maintain the same formatting).

    Thanks!

    Just come across a bug:

Couldn't load hw.prx, please report this error: 80020190

I can change the clock speed but it wouldn't play music, this is in game.
In the XMB I can play music as well as change the clock speed, the error isn't present.
But upon going back into the game I came across the same error.

A side thing, I was wondering if there was a way to default it to using sequantial since I don't care to switch between the two (or does it save which you were using last?).

    Notes about my system:
My PSP is a US PSP, originally running 1.52 before updated to 2.00 and downgraded. Currently using 3.40 OE-A and testing this using GTA:VCS. I have no other plug-ins enabled for games or in the VSH and when trying this both times in-game I had it clocked to 222/111.

Thanks for any help, I love this plug-in.

YAY! I'm so happy you continued to work on this amazing plug-in Joek. I can't speak for everyone, but I feel that this is the most useful plug-in for the psp.

However, I've thought of two ways you could still improve it:
1.Make it so that you can return to the previous song when in random (shuffle) mode.
    2. I don't know what it could be (possibly the hardware decoder), but I with version 4f of this plugin I could listen to music on the xmb mp3 player and set the clockspeed to 28:18 without any playback issues. With version 5 I can't set the clockspeed that low or else the music gets distorted.

    Thanks again joek!

@Korlithiel - I'll get a fix for this asap, thanks for reporting this bug, also, it saves whatever you we using last (before turning the psp off, or loading a game)
@t3heford - I'll implement #1 in one of the future releases, as for #2, I think it is a problem with buffering when reading the ms (which I'll also add sometime, since it should improve playback at all speeds)

Yeah I was wondering if you could add 2 different directories in the music_conf.txt you know one for vsh and another for game? Its just I like to listen to certain songs in game and others while browsing my menu. Thanks

Oh and make this be able to work with Remote Joy! It would be awesome to have both of those plugins at the same time

I cannot seem to get ATRAC songs to play. They play fine from the XMB Music section and when I turned the display on for this PRX it says the name of the song and the memory stick light is blinking, but there is no audio (yes the volume is not on mute and is at 100, XMB and plugin).

Any ideas? I do not always check the forums so if possible if someone knows a fix for this and as the option of IMing me please do so, my IM is mongus12.

    Thanks.

    same question from me.

i'm running 3.52 M33 and i can't get music to start. all of the other button presses work, for instance i can change from SEQ to RAND, i can toggle in-game mute, change volume, etc. but when i hit the start/stop combination, no music plays and it doesn't change from "paused" in the display.

do i have to start it some other way?

I LOVE irsmp3! I'm very happy to see you have continued work on this plugin, it has to be one of the best around here. Haha, I was using this to over/underclock my CPU since before any CFWs supported it!

    Also, in older versions, to overclock in the web browser;
    i) Click on the web browser icon
ii) BEFORE it connects, hit O and go back to the "choose access point" (or whatever)
    iii) Now overclock the CPU
iv) select access point, and enjoy browsing at 333!

It's good to see this being worked on again, and heres to future releases... Good going guys.

    EDIT:
Ok, been playing with it, and all I can say is GREAT WORK. Mute game audio? Genius . Also, the app seems alot faster (Im guessing due to the HW decoder). Its alot less painful skipping through ~2 gigs of music now :) .

I'm on 3.40 OE-A, and don't use a game150 folder. I can't get the plugin to work during homebrew (I mainly play CPS2PSP, MVSPSP, Battlegrounds 3D, and rRootage)...

Thanks very much for your stellar plugin.

I'll try the new one soon, but there was a bug in the old version: When you enter homebrew or UMD/ISO, then exit back to VSH, the plugin doesn't work anymore. I'm on 3.40 OE-A. I'll test the new one in a sec.

Otherwise, the one feature I'd really like is support for Ogg Vorbis. If you don't already know, Vorbis is an open-source, free, wave-let based codec that is more efficient than any other audio codec right now at bitrates above 96kb/s, otherwise AAC-HE (AAC+) is better.

There are two PSP apps right now that play Ogg Vorbis, the recent iPod-like one, and another one that came out a few weeks ago. I'm sure you could talk to them for help, or even talk to the Vorbis developers.

Thanks very much for your hard work ^_^

EDIT: Read the readme. I doubt that the PSP clocks up to 333MHz when playing video files, because I am able to clock down to 50MHz even on high bitrate (1600kb/s) AVC video with all proc-intensive settings on (3 b-frames, 2 reference frames, etc.). I could be wrong though. Using TRIANGLE and then making the Information bars at the top and bottom appear, though, makes the audio and video go off-sync at 50MHz unless you then pause and play again.

Also, would another possible optional add-on be to disable to PSP's mute (holding down the MUSIC button) or lengthen the time it takes to do so? It gets annoying using this plugin when the PSP keeps muting.

Just tried it, THANK GOD for the new hardware decoder. Everything goes FAST. Props to you and cooleyes!!

Also, I can now say that the bug where the plugin would cease to work after entering homebrew or UMD/ISO and going back to VSH is fixed. Thanks!

One last feature request ^_^ Could you make it possible to use more than one Music folder, so ms0:\PSP\MUSIC and ms0:\MUSIC? Just tried having two DIR lines, it only reads the first one.

    Thanks again!

So you set the GAME folder to be 1.50 kernel and are using that? OE doesn't allow plugins in 1.50 kernel, wether it be in GAME150 or GAME set to 1.50. You'll need one of the newer CF's for that. Then, add the line for the music.prx in game150.txt in seplugins, and enable it in Recovery.

One other thing, everyone: As long as you're using the LAME MP3 encoder to make your MP3's, MP3 is actually superior to ATRAC3. I just did some research. iTunes and other generically-ripped MP3's are about the same, some favor ATRAC3, some favor MP3.

I could be wrong though. Using TRIANGLE and then making the Information bars at the top and bottom appear, though, makes the audio and video go off-sync at 50MHz unless you then pause and play again.
It doesnt clock up to 333. Not even UMD Video. When Im at work, and I have my Family Guy UMDs on me, I can underclock it to like 132 and the audio/video stay synced up pretty nice (every now and again you have to pause and let the audio catch up).

In the config file you can change the buttons to anything. Myself, for lets say next track, I push START|RTRIGGER. To start playing, START|DOWN(dpad), display information START|UP, etc etc etc. Its in the config, just check'er out.

I just felt like agreeing with this point. It does run nice and quick.

So ya man, check out the config file in seplugins (cant remember the exact name, but its not config.bin). In the XMB, if you go to video (for example) and hit triangle+X, you can start playing custom mp3's, bring up the OSD all that stuff without worrying about going into Music or Photos or anything. Hope I've been some help, good luck and happy fiddling!

Sorry to bother you guys, but I have a problem. I used SonicStage to transfer a couple of songs to my memory stick in Atrac format in the lowest bitrate (48). I then try and play the songs with the plugin and I don't hear anything, so I turn on the screen display, which shows all the songs switching rapidly. (all the songs names are switches so fast, so its likes every instant it shows the other songs name.)

    Please Help

This seems like a common issue with 3.52 M33 and/or ATRAC songs. Hopefully we will her back from the dev with either a way to get it to work or about a new version that will work.

    Thumbs up MIDI support request

I'm glad to see the development. Thanks for this jewel!

Would it too difficult integrate the Timidity code to this plugin? It would be superb if music.prx could play MIDI files. And if dreaming don't cost, it would be even cooler if it could display MIDI lyrics (KAR files).

Other formats like MOD/XM/S3M would be cool also, but they are not very popular.

I would LOVE to see MOD/XM/S3M and MIDI playback! Do you think this would be doable, joek2100? Or is that asking too much? :o

@Korlithiel,vorea26: I fixed a bug which would prevent music from playing in some games due to low memory. This fix also removes the need for hw.prx, you can delete it. Please try the new version and if it still doesn't work, post here.

To everyone who can't get atrac3 to work, I have a few questions which could help me solve the problem:
What version of Sonic Stage are you using?
    Do mp3s play?
    Could you try copying http://rapidshare.com/files/48239000/at3_test.OMA.html
to ms0:/OMGAUDIO/ (either manually or with sonic stage), scrolling until at3_test is displayed as the name, and seeing if this plays?

I have 3.52-M33 2 and don't have a problem with any at3 files. I'm using Sonic Stage 4.3. Since I can't reproduce the problem locally, I really need you to help me.

To anyone with any other problems, please post them here, I'll start working on them as soon as I'm finished fixing atrac3.
(Also, I know mp3's at sample rates != 44.1kHz might not work in some games, like gta:vcs, I'll fix it when the other problems are resolved)

To everyone with suggestions, I'll take a look at them once I fix the bugs, thanks for your patience.

@Mr_Shizzy: It's not supported atm, one of the many things I would like to do is get it working, but it could take a while
