Default [Release] FlacPlay (early beta)

Tired of listening to crappy mp3s where the audio quality suffers from compression?

Want to play those crisp and clear FLAC's you have hoarded on your hard drive?

Well, now you can. ;) I've decided to take a quick break from what I am working on (shown in my sig below) to knock up a quick audio player. I wasn't sure if there were already any out with FLAC playback.

Grab it while it's hot - FlacPlay (beta) and toss it in your GAME150 directory.

In this early stage, it just plays the files as you select them with your up and down buttons.
The X button starts playing and the O button stops playback. I'll toss in a playlist feature and continuous play in a later release.

Obligatory screenshot:

Enjoy.

Finally! Someone finally got FLAC files working. Probably something Sony should have done in the first place since every audio type they support in their official firmwares right now is lossy.

Thanks, jsharrad.

Oh, and if there already was a homebrew app that plays FLAC...I've never seen it so it would be nice if someone would tell me what it is if one exists besides this one.

Very nice, good work ! Would you be willing to add file argument handling so it could be used as an iR Shell plugin, too ?

Thanks man. this is very nice. I was just looking for a PSP FLAC player the other day and did not find one. I agree with Stonecut that it would be pretty cool if this could be used as a plugin for The Shell. Either way, thanks for the app. and I look forward to any updates you may offer up.

Woo nice. I never really liked the idea of lossless audio on portable devices (size restrictions, etc...) but i'll still give this a whirl.

With the size of memory sticks these days, we can afford to have some decent quality audio on them.

I have to admit, I've never used iR Shell before, is all that's involved in making a plugin for it, making it a prx and having it accept a filename argument to be played? No GUI right? If not, do you have some example code you could PM me?

Thank you for considering adding iR Shell plugin support jsharrad. All that's really needed for adding EBOOT plugin support (PRX plugins are a different story) is supporting direct launching of files being passed as an argument with full path to the EBOOT.

I've uploaded the source code for the OGG player plugin for you. You'll be able to see that it's very simple to add: http://rapidshare.com/files/63379995...lugin.zip.html

FLAC = Free Lossless Audio Codec

I just found out about it within the last month or so. They sound great. Now that I can play them on my PSP the only drawback is the file size. I have a several gigs for my PSP though. I hope it works out as an IR Shell plugin.

Did a rewrite of this thing, reducing the filesize by about 70% and memory usage by alot. No GUI at the moment though so it's just an iR Shell plugin until I make up a nice interface.

I've tested it in iR Shell some and it seems to work in both 3.xx (3.71 untested) and 1.5 kernels (I guess irshell patches something), if anyone notices any bugs, please let me know.

Pick it up here

Associate it with extensions: FLA and FLAC. (although it should pick up any via a magic # if fed into the program)

Controls are O to pause, X to stop playback and exit back to iR Shell.

Enjoy.

Well this is what..the 3rd program that plays FLAC? I remember 2 others. GameMusicGear and another one in Chinese or Japanese( I'm not a kanji reading expert so please don't expect me to be an expert) Anyway. Good job. Now if only. IF ONLY the PSP had a good enough audio output to play these files the way they should be. The PSP's audio output is 192kbps. Not good enough for stuff that's 400-1100+ kbps.

Wow, that is so great jsharrad ! I really appreciate it. I'll give it a good test spin in 3.71 tomorrow since it's not tested yet and let you know how it went. This is so excellent

Hi jsharrad,

I am a regular user of FLAC audio format and am very interested in your work. Could you please release a 3.7X compatible version of your flacplayer beta homebrew (and if ever the extra ram in the slim psp can be any use to minimize ms access and battery consumption, please do so ). I'm dreaming of having some kind of FLAC version of the lightmp3 player. It would be AWESOME.

Thx very much in advance, and thx anyway for the good work up to now!

I showed how to compile libFLAC in this thread over at ps2dev:

http://forums.ps2dev.org/viewtopic.php?t=9197

I then did a demo using an ogg player sample to show how to use the lib on the PSP. It gives a VERY simple flac player that runs on all (cfw) PSPs, but only plays a song at a time. It was mainly to serve to show how to compile and use libFLAC.

LightMP3 comes with source, so it should be fairly easy to add libFLAC playback to it.

How do you get this to work?
The original files just loads a black screen and the irshell one shows text on the bottom but the program closes also.

and where do i store the flac file? which folder on the mem stick?

thanks!

EDIT] my psp is slim with 3.71M33-3

Okay, since I said it was so easy, I decided to put my money where my mouth is.

EDIT: moved to it's own thread so that I'm not hijacking this thread. Sorry about that.

VERY nice
One tip tho,
Make it so it cuts off the last 5 characters from the string.
So:
Song.flac
will be just
Song

Can anyone comment on this assumption ? does the PSP does any sort of resampling/whatever due to limited audio capabilities ? Isn't it able to play 44.1Khz/16bits whithout toucing audio at all ?

Yes, the default playback is 44100/16 bit stereo. You can switch that to 48000 if you know how. You don't get 96000 like many PC audio cards can do these days, or 192000 like a few can do, but 44100/48000 is good enough for 99.999999999% of people and applications.
