Another quick version, playing mostly with shading and color.
like the the logo, simple and eye catching and will look very nice displayed on the PSP starting up.
alfatreae's logo will be picked for this project now known as openchoice.
If you like to email me the logo file to firstname.lastname@example.org I will start using it and set up the simple site with credit going to you as the designer of the logo.
busy working on the graphics myself on the UI elements and the action zone code that will react on sections of the screen for these UI elements.
like the logo in red as it is very striking on black
and second logo is my choice for openchoice project

Yes the logo does look nice. Also i hope to see this release.
I still may do a couple of iterations until I'm completely pleased, some type work mostly and some tweaks on the inner curve and C opening.
It would work really well as an anim with particle effects too :).
I have also sketched many ideas for the UI. interaction mechanics, display methods, a few ideas for sorting and tagging. I also have a couple of ideas from some other personal projects that may generate some potential.
If you'd like we can discuss these, or I can post them here once I've laid them down in digital form (although it's easier for me to share a large image, since I work mostly in illustrator and keep iterating and annotating stuff).
I also have a couple of suggestions for the skinning abilities of openchoice, mainly to do with the ability to customize and edit every element of the skin.
A plugin framework would be a nice idea too, so people could develop modules to integrate inside choice, (e.g. media player, picture viewer, etc).
I hope you're interested in my input, as I have a good experience in UI design, and I believe I can contribute to make openchoice a really useful and useable shell.
I can be contacted at:
plugin framework and fully skinable is on the top of the list, openchoice concept is plugin and skinable, as the elements that will makeup openchoice are just going to be addons to this desktop ui homebrew but will look to the user as one big powerfull shell for the PSP, links fully customizable like the animation idea or the logo look nice for a intro for openchoice.
the MP3 player will be MP3light as it seems to be very popular and gived the deveoper of it my id3 library for dealing with the MP3 ID3 tags so like to support this player, perhaps the developer of it will take some of openchoice graphics to make MP3light look part of openchoice, and take part in openchoice by providing the MP3 player for it.
alfatreae perhaps you like to start an offical openchoice thread with the logo since you have come up with the name and logo design
As for the announcement I think you should be the one to do it. As the first stone is yours. I'm just the first plugin on the open concept. Hopefully we'll pick up a few more good hands along.
The announcement should be well laid out thugh, with a solid set of specifications in mind. The general architecture and openness. hosting for the source, subversion or similar and whatnot.
I'll be doing a lot of UI concepts in illustrator, so I'll be sharing those from time to time, in .AI, .EPS and .SVG.
I've worked with sakya in the past doing mockups and designs for the new LightMP3 2, though I went under for a while (vacations and overload of work), and haven't been in contact or seen from him in a while. I do still have all the things I've worked on of course. I know he hasn't got much time for coding so we'll have to see if he'd like to embed Light in openchoice.
Just to get things going here's a couple of wireframe mockups/sketches for ui concepts.
1st draft (just starting to port from paper) for openchice concepts
Methods and UI for sorting and listing content
LightMP3 Skin I was developing
This one should almost work on the latest LMP3 version (audiobooks is artit's impression) :)
Concept for a fully stack/widget based UI concept with the Pandora
handheld in mind (alpha stage, still most on paper :) )
These shoulg get something rolling, I'm probably not gonna be able to sit down and do anything meaningless in the next couple of days due to work.
But I'm certainly not gonna have my mind idle
I'm impatient to see a public release. If you need a beta tester it will be a pleasure for me.
But I wonder... Are you sure that use a mouse is a good idea for a PSP Shell ? I'm not sure is it very practical.
The concept stems from extreme modularity and customization, so you can start with predefined setups, but easily and organically adapt to your needs. You can have either extreme minimalism with just an icon, or a full desktop all using the same pragmatic.
The most difficult part to implement, as I am conceiving it, would be that it is thought for a platform that is still open and easy to hook up to the OS framework, so launching emulators from the list, collecting stats and a few other possibilities would be probably hard to implement or even impossible on the PSP.
I have many different concepts and they need to be weighed in terms of feasibility, usability, difficulty to implement, flexibility, and other ***ility's alike.
That design is not far off what I have been up to on designing the UI, and fits well into what I have in mind for the UI.
I very much like that concept of stacks and icon on the icon focus stuff.
also the mouse will be optional as not every one may like it so it can be turned off and analog used as a secondary digital direction controller
Work well under way now as I start to get the main part of OpenChoice working.
Source code and webpage for OpenChoice will be here as soon they is plent of the code ready to post

OpenChoice "Pogress Report"
GLUE V1.0 "BUILD 0C000" Completed.
SHELL Alpha 1 Soon
These are the two main elements of OpenChoice, the shell is treated like any other homebrew and it is the glue that controles all elements and binds all the homebrew element of OpenChoice to behave like one large homebrew app.
