I'm pretty sure it's all about the same, try fedora or ubuntu

Doesn't matter so much, really. Just get Ubuntu if you're new to Linux.

Hehehe, I used Gentoo. Once. emerge gets really annoying if your machine doesn't run at 200THz, which I'm guessing it doesn't

You really dont need emerge if you know how to compile from source...

Even tho emerge can do much more than just install a program...

I like gentoo, stuff compiles on my system pretty quickly so installing stuff with portage is relatively painless and good for being up to date. I think the longest compile time I had was ~8 hours when I recompiled every single package (655 of them) on my system when I upgraded gcc major versions.
I started it before I went to bed though, so it was done within minutes of me waking up.
