Default [Release] Wagic, The Homebrew ?! (Magic the gathering against AI)

The ALPHA Release is an old Release, please check the new thread at [Release] Wagic, the Homebrew !? for the latest information. Thanks

Wagic is a game that allows you to play "Magic the Gathering" against an AI opponent.
This is a very early release, but you never know what's gonna happen tomorrow, so better now than never.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: No media files are hosted on these forums. By clicking the link below you agree to view content from an external website. We can't be held responsible for the suitability or legality of this material.
I AGREE

Game modes:
  • 1 Player vs AI
  • 2 Players hotseat
  • Demo mode (AI vs AI)

The game mainly focuses on 1Player vs AI. You start with a randomly generated collection of cards, that enables you to create your first deck in the Deck editor. As you win games against the computer and earn creadits, you can buy more cards in the Shop, and improve your decks.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THIS IS AN ALPHA, USE AT YOUR OWN RISK !!!
WTH?! 0.0.2 ALPHA

For those who want to go further, background music and sources are available at http://wololo.net/wagic/download/
I'd really like to see people improving the game

:O

I tried it a bit.

The interface is very user friendly, i liked that, but when you try to change between colors (up and down on the d-pad) on the card selection screen the game crashes.

I'll try it later to see if i can find more bugs.

Keep up the good work! ^^,

Hey Zeratos, could you tell me how to reproduce the bug ? I wasn't able to do it on my machine.
A (Youtube) video would be the best

A Donators-only beta version has been released.
http://wololo.net/wagic/ for more info
If you donated to the project and didn't receive the file yet, please drop me an email or a pm.

Here are a few screenshots of the new version:

It should be publicly available after a few weeks of beta test

This isn't going to go down well.

You can't expect people in a homebrew community to pay for software. It doesn't work like that. People have tried to do this in the past and it didn't have a very good outcome.

Although I sortof agree with you in theory, I think you misinterpreted my message. I'd like you to read my post again and focus more. I'm not expecting people to pay for my homebrew, I'm thanking those who did.

I hope it is clear that the game is open source, freeware, and this version just needs a bit testing before being released, which should happen in a few weeks.

Also, people who donate usually donate for what's been accomplished so far, and not based on some expectation of the future version. I hope that if you had actually tried the game in its current version (which, again, is downloadable for free as well as the source code), you wouldn't have posted this message.

Finally, I think you have no idea on the hosting costs involved with this project.

I have lots to say on the subject, so the rest of my reply to you in pm

Hosting costs? Use something like google code or sourceforge.

Also, if you need a mirror, just say so. There are plenty of people around here with spare bandwidth.

I agree in principle, but this isn't quite the same as what was done in the past.
donators to the project are more likely to be keen testers than the general PSP community.
I think it's fair enough to offer them betas first, and then the general community.

Getting back on topic I just wanted to send a very heart felt KUDOS to the developer of this application. I've always wanted to play Magic on my PsP and not only is it now possible, but it's becoming a very professional looking and polished application to boot.

There's still a few bugs to iron out (I got a lockup scrolling through my collection to create my first deck) but already this Homebrew is shaping up to be a 'must have' for any old school CCG gaming fan with a PSP.

Please don't let this project die. Keep at it and you'll have my support all the way.

Quality homebrew like this deserves our support!

Excellent work so far Dev, keep it up!!!

PS - If I can add in a small suggestion?

Have you considered adding a 'quick game' option from the main menu? Have say, 10 pre-made decks in the game and allow you to pick any one (or random) and play against the AI right from the start - rather than have to go through the process of creating a deck from scratch?

Although most gamers will be keen to get into the 'create your own deck' idea, sometimes (especially for newcomers to magic) it's nicer to just play a quick game at random whilst waiting for the bus.

Cheers

This is going to make your app crash and burn.

Anybody remember Psix? Didn't go over so well then, either, and his work was actually original.

Not to mention that WotC might decide to sue you for charging for a knockoff of their game, even as a beta...

He already stated it was only for beta testing, and IIRC he already made public the new beta.

They'll sue me anyway eventually. I might as well steal as much money as possible from honest people while I can. When WotC knock on my door, I'll be far away on an island (or a plains ?) bought with the donation money.

Also, my app didn't wait for the closed-beta to crash and burn

Finally, the beta is over and the new version has been released.

Please don't think that people don't appreciate the work you're doing here, people are just a little funny about money is all.

I'm currently using version 010 at the moment. Still getting a few lockups when going through card selections, else it's looking quite good at the moment.

If you'd like to pull me into your beta testing team even though I'm not a donator, I'd really be happy to help out! PM me!!!

Cheers.

Thanks warsaw. I do not work fast, and I like new releases to bring lots of contents, so don't expect a new version too soon, but I'll keep people informed of the next beta release on my blog (which will probably not be donators-only, given the criticism this idea received).

The current version is definitely not perfect, so you can still post bugs here or on my blog, this will help.
I know about the Deck Editor instability, and wasn't able to find the root cause yet. Some other bugs are probably easier to describe, such as cards not working the way they should.

I also like your idea of "quick play", maybe I should ask people to build decks that work for beginners ? (and with no buggy cards )

I didn't mean anything like that... but the guy who did most of the coding for Psix (Qubitz) asked for donations because he just wanted a new laptop...

No offense taken, I understand where you guys are coming from. It is difficult to see what is vaporware and what is not, especially when money is involved, and especially in the PSP homebrew community (wasn't QJ in the middle of some huge scam - PSPAdvance - a few years ago, by the way ? ).

I still don't think a closed beta for donators was fundamentally wrong, though. Especially since it's clear from the beginning (when I released the alpha, 2 months ago) that I'm not a scam.

I created a new post at [Release] Wagic, the Homebrew !? because this thread's title is misleading, and several external sites linked to the old (alpha) version of the game yesterday.

Mods, can you lock this topic ? Thanks in advance.
