Default [GAME] Blob Volleyball

---------------------
-- Blob Volleyball --
---------------------
Blob Volleyball is a heavily physics-based volleyball copycat using the incredible JelloPhysics library in which you must fling the ball over to the opponents side of the net. For every successful point against the opponent, you gain 50 points; and for every score your opponent gets, you lose 50 points. You must not allow your score to go below 0, or else it is game over for you. Each opponent requires 5 successful serves against them in order to move on to the next opponent. This game features a loopable song which can be placed in the ms0:/MUSIC/ folder, and this game can also play your favourite mp3s located in the ms0:/MUSIC/ folder as well.

The controls are as follows:

Left -> Move your blob to the left
Right -> Move your blob to the right
Up -> Jump your blob
Circle -> Drop ball for your serve
Right Trigger -> "Bulge" your blob to fling the ball
SQUARE + (Left Trigger or Right Trigger) -> Switch between the currently playing mp3s
Select -> Pause the game

If you have the motion kit plugged in, the only thing supported so far is tilting left/right to move your blob. You may also fling the psp upwards to jump your blob.

This game also provides a multiplayer mode that requires 2 people to play on one psp. The controls are as follows for multiplayer games:

Left -> Move player1 blob to the left
Right -> Move player1 blob to the right
Up -> Jump player1 blob
Down -> Drop ball for player1 serve
Left Trigger -> "Bulge" player1 blob to fling the ball

Square -> Move player2 blob to the left
Circle -> Move player2 blob to the right
Triangle -> Jump player2 blob
Cross -> Drop ball for player2 serve
Right Trigger -> "Bulge" player2 blob to fling the ball
Select -> Pause the game

You can view a video of the game here.
(I will also provide a screenshot in a bit)

This game should be compatible in both the 1.50 and 3.xx/4.xx kernel.

Alot of the inspiration came from a game called slime volleyball which is readily available on the internet, so I would like to give a nice big shout out to that game.
I would also like to formally thank
- Thanks caliarbor for MP3 ME Player & sakya for LightMP3
- Thanks Raphael for motion kit driver & support
- Thanks Drakon for both porting the JelloPhysics library and for all of the help you provided to me, I couldn't have done it without you!

Will give this a try.

I vaguely remember another volleyball game on the PSP with blobs.
Deja vu.

Edit: I guess I should have read the whole readme. Doh!

Great game! I just suck at it :-(

One suggestion I have would be to have less deformation when you hit the sides of the screen. I often go towards the side of my screen to hit the ball but in my rush to do so my blob gets pancaked in the corner.

I guess that's part of the challenge :-P

I think it can be better with some pleasant backgrounds of the ocean or something to spice the game up.

On newer firmwares, the MUSIC folder can be in both the ms0:/ OR the ms0:/PSP/ folder. I personally use the MUSIC folder in the root, and so I chose to make the music folder for this game read from ms0:/MUSIC/ as well.

On a side note, I'm going to try and add adhoc to it tomorrow. Hopefully I can get it working

Great work as always slasher! Glad to see you're still dev'ing strong, even though it's for the NeoFlash Comp. What's up with you not even being able to score in "your" own game?

This is pretty cool though I was only able to get up to the second level(and even that was because the A.I. messed up). I realized, from watching the A.I., that the bulge is an important part of gameplay but I have yet to master it. Any tips on how to win(though I don't know if I should be asking you, lol)?

Great work, I love it so far. Any chance of extra modes or anything of the sort?

Hey, hey, hey, I can explain...
have you ever tried playing a psp without actually looking at the screen? I used my laptop webcam to record that video(so it was sort of backwards) and I was holding the PSP quite awkwardly so it was tough to play effectively

I'm better at drawing than explaining

Also, did you notice I dropped my PSP at the end of the video? lol It smacked the edge of my laptop keyboard

Understandable. Whenever I've recorded video I just placed a camera on my bed or some other flat surface and put the PSP in front and played with both hands with ease - I find it odd that people try to play with one hand and record with the other (where's the logic in that?).

I might just have to resurrect my PSP for your game. Do you plan to improve on it after the compeittion at all?

My #1 plan is to make the AI more effective. Maybe it's just me, but I can wreck the first couple of opponents no problem. If they were more tough, I think the game will be better as a whole.

This release is somewhat rushed because I plan on releasing another game in the next couple of days as well, so I didn't have the time to add all of the bells and whistles I was wanting too. With maintaining my job, I just don`t have the time I wish I had. I definitely plan on improving it though.

The biggest tip I can give is just to keep trying. Get a feel for the game, and you`ll know exactly when to use the bulge and win.

I just use remotejoysdl + xvidcap, removes the need for a camera... records straight from the desktop :P

I tried on my psp (CFW 3.90 I think).
The game starts, shows the Neo Gen competition flash screen, plays 1 second of what I think is the music (song.mp3), then crashes (screen freeze, home button not working, have to hold the power button for 20 seconds).
I put the game in the 3.xx games folder, didn't try with the 1.50 yet.

Any idea ? The game looks fun and I'd love to try it !

Hmm, that is a very odd error. This is the one and only issue I've heard reported.

What type of PSP do you have? Slim or Phat?
Are you sure you were using the 3.xx/4.xx kernel?
Try putting it into the "GAME" folder

Phat PSP
Firmware 3.71 m33-4
GAME directory is set to use the 3.xx firmware

Launching the game from the GAME directory(kernel 3.xx) crashes at the splash screen

Launching the game from the GAME150 directory works fine. Had lots of fun with the game this morning. Very difficult though o.O
