Default [Release] PSPComic v1.0.1

Despite it being over half a year since the last version of PSPComic, this is a MINOR version upgrade, and likely the last official version of PSPComic. However, if you feel like you can improve it, you can always release your own version due to the fact that it's released under the GPL. Just make sure to follow the terms! I warn you though, the source is kind of a mess.

Note that this has not been tested with the 4.xx kernel! However, it will probably work. Use the 3.xx version.

Changelog:
  • [Feature] Archives are now detected when opening by contents instead of extension. However, menus are still generated by extension
  • [Feature] Shift-JIS support for filenames when the PSP's character set is set to Shift-JIS
  • [Feature] Zoom box colors can now be customized in themes, as well as error text color
  • [Bugfix] Fixed a RAR loading bug
  • [Bugfix] No more weird behavior on resume or when the memory stick is removed, however the program will claim that no memory stick is inserted for a small period of time after the program is resumed
  • [Bugfix] Fixed file handle leak in directory reading
  • And many more minor changes...

Ah, this is one of the must used homebrews on my PSP. It has been keeping all of my physical comics crisp, Thanks for the update. I have been having problems with some RAR loading so this will definitely be great for me. So sad, though, that you are going to stop developing it. I guess, though, that since it works almost perfectly for me(aside from some SDL Image Load errors, and RAR loading problems occasionally) I really won't need new releases.

Great job. Hope you come up with some more stuff in the future.

Archaemic, I'm new to PSPComic, but I'm very impressed by it so far. I do (sorry!) have some requests, and if you'll be kind enough to indulge me then I've copied and pasted what I wrote on your blog page, in case you haven't seen it. If you have now abandoned PSPComic then fair enough, but please consider adding my suggestions, as they'll make PSPComic much more usuable, I feel.

[The following is copied and pasted from your blog page]

Thanks for PSPComic which I’ve just discovered (via the pspupdates web site). It’s a great program, but I have some alterations to the controls that I’d like to see implemented, and I hope you’ll consider these ideas.

1. Can you add an option so that all images are viewed at “reduced/maximised to fit the PSP screen” by default, so they fill the screen either vertically or horizontally (usually vertically), but stay in ratio, [this is already possible by pressing TRIANGLE on an image that is too large for the screen, but I’d prefer an option to “Enlarge/Minimize all images to fit screen”, please],

2. Can you make it so that when viewing pictures at fit the PSP screen size, then D-PAD left and D-PAD right moves to the previous/next images respectively, and D-PAD up and D-PAD down move select the file ten behind and ten infront respecively, and the Left Shoulder button moves to the first image in the archive, and pressing the Right Shoulder button goes to the final image in the archive.

3. Can you make is so that in the file selector, and page within an archive selector, then pressing D-PAD and D-PAD move up and down respectively by ten files, which will make navigating long lists much easier and faster,

Please consider releasing a version with these additons, as they would make PSPComic much more usuable, I think.

The only sites you can probably find are manga sites and sites with a few free comics here and there(e.g. Dark Horse's MySpace site). American comics and the like cannot be found online. The reason is that it is illegal to share copies of comics. I believe you can only have a digital copy for personal use also meaning that you should have bought the actual comic before.

1. Is already available for horizontal only. Vertical would be too squished.
2. Parts of this one might make sense, but the thing is, without scrollbars, it's sometimes hard to tell if you have it full-screen, depending on the mode you're in.
3. Use the L and R triggers. They already do this.

Thank you for updating this very useful application.

It has been consistently on my PSP since I discovered it existed.

I thought I should give you the following feedback as it would be a great shame if you finished on a slightly flawed version. Although I understand you may have abandoned this project.

I use a PSP Phat and 4.01 M33-2, and I get the following error with the latest update.

If I install in the 1.50 folder then I get the following message whenever I try to open a comic. "error loading book", but if I install it in the GAME folder I can open the comics, but the usb enable function does not work from the menu.

The previous version v1.0.0 worked fine in 1.50 kernel with the USB enable function working, but it also does not allow the usb enable in the 4.00 kernel.

btw I'm opening cbr and cbz files.

I am a total novice when it comes to homebrew, so it may be the settings I am using in the firmware, in fact I hope it is so that I can use the update fully, but fear this is not the case.

I therefore must either remain with the previous version or give up on the very nice usb function within the program.

Is there any chance of this being fixed in future?
or can someone point me in the correct direction to change my firmware setting to use the latest version without errors?

Well, I am using the exact same firmware as you(4.01 M33-2) and am using the 3.xx version of PSPComic. I have it installed in the GAME folder and everything works fine including the USB function. It is possible that there is something wrong with your PSP CFW settings though I have no idea what could be the cause of these errors.

Cool.

So I may be able to mess around and get it working.

Are you also using a PSP Phat? As that did require installation of the 1.50 support seperately when updating to 4.01

Yup, my one and only PSP is a Phatty. In order to keep playing the games from the past(and apparently certain games today like StarSlalom) I installed the 1.50 kernel too so we are like twin brothers or something.

Sorry for double posting but the edit function was not working on the site

Thank you for confirming the program works fine in 4.01 and it is just a problem with my setup.

This enabled me to figure out the problem. it was the remoteJoy plugin. once this was disabled the usb enable function was working.

Hmm I seem to be having some trouble getting this to work on my slim 4.01 M33 cfw psp. In either the GAME or GAME4XX folder, after I start the app a screen comes up saying "theme could not be loaded." The comic directory is in the root, any ideas?

Do you have the ".pspcomic" folder inside the "COMIC" folder? The ".pspcomic" folder is what holds the themes.

I do not...but when I go to make that folder it says that I cannot insert a "." in a folder name. I've attempted this on both my MAC laptop and work PC.

That is very odd that you cannot do that but you don't need to make a folder. In the Mega Pack, at least, there should be a folder in the ZIP file that is called ".pspcomic" and you should place that folder inside the COMIC folder. You don't need to make a folder at all as it is all ready made.

The base pack has it as well, but there's less stuff in it. If you're just using English, you don't need any of the extra stuff that's in the mega pack (except nbm if you're using a PSP-1000, but that can be downloaded separately).

Thanks for replying, and sorry for taking so long to answer myself (long story, my life is complicated at the moment).

Anyway,

1. I was thinking of the comic strip sizes like Calvin and Hobbes or Peanuts, although to be fair I've never seen a size format like this for download.

2. I don't mind the lack of scrollbars, I just think the feature would be good to have.

3. Yes, but DPAD left and right seem more natural.

Cheers, mate, and good luck with your future projects.

I'm having quite a bit of difficultly installing this app as I can't create a folder with a period before it and that theme error appears. Any way we can get a download of the app with the correct folder structure? Pretty please?

if you download either the base pack or the mega pack both will contain the folder you are referring to; .pspcomic , yeah ?

I recently upgraded to a new PC which has Vista installed on it and fang does not seem to run on Vista, when attempting to process the cbr's to reduce the sizes (i often get the error message on a PSP 1000 if i view them straight up as .cbr/.cbz) fang's typical message stating the files were successfully compressed shows up within seconds ( clearly this is an error as there is no possibly way to compress a 26mb comic in seconds, let alone 10 or more. So, my question is, how can I resolve this ? PSP Comic is one of the most used apps on my PSP, I have even modified the pic0 and boot warning image and themes to suit.

To create a cbr file, just compress the images into an rar and rename the extension. That is all a cbr is.

For cbz, it is the same thing but with a zip file. Just use WinRAR, or 7zip, on max compression then change the extension, or you can keep the same extension, it will still work.
