Default [WIP] Unamed RPG

I have been working on this for a few days. I finally decided to release an alpha. Unfortunately there are only 3 maps and thats really it. I plan to have this become a full game. My view for this game is classic rpg. Feel free to make suggestions/ideas.

This really pushes the PSP to it's max!
Lol, but seriously! Don't give up on it. There's about 100 RPG homebrew games for PSP that haven't gone past the Alpha stage! Keep going!

Wow Sucky.

Cory make something a lot smaller and make that decent and learn a lot more before you waste your time on something like this. I am surprised Psprog didn't tell you just how much work a RPG needs and you are noway near ready.

Go back to the drawing board and make something a lot simpler and don't waste our time.

Other points -

I guess collisions are being hard coded as are maps? no tile maps etc? (not a fact i just CBA to download it)
You haven't released anything decent if at all yet have you and your jumping to a rpg?
You are correct about plenty. And what you have done if is not smart to post on the ever critical QJ Psp dev forums.

Just don't waste your time on this and try learning more stuff first like making a pacman clone. If you can happily make a DECENT pacman clone in a few days without help or copying someone else's work and show me that then i will lay my life down defending you saying that you can do this. (Hint hint - Not going to happen)

There is a reason this is a WIP and an alpha. What if people were like you are now when you posted your first app. What would you say? Why even post if you are going to be so negative? Is there really a point? Unfortunately I can not say what you are else I might get banned. Also guess what, I don't care what you think, I want to do something that I believe can become a success. And I believe I can make this a game that people want to play. So hope enjoy the finished version when it comes out, even though it will be a while. XD

Also, no I have not released anything before, but you have to start somewhere. And I chose an RPG. And I have copied no one's work. I only ask questions and got suggestions that lead me the right way.

the typical RPG wip/alpha these days.....cory, i'd hope that the next person to post an rpg wip would have learned from the previous rpg wip's, but it seems that it only is making people go backwards not forward in what they post

Believe me when i say i spent time in that post making sure to explain it to you in simple form and not to try to belittle you. I could have very easily been harsh and offending and i did not. Heed some advice and stop being a knowitall/childish.

Slicer has given you a handy link for if you go ahead with this but you should should reconsider and always think "is this out of my league" before making something. Doubly so before announcing it here.

Believe me when i say if you release something here in the future now people will think "omg its him" before actually checking your work.

Also this cannot be BOTH a WIP and a Alpha fgs (yes fine i made up a acronym to avoid swearing). Please go google and read Yuastars guide to making homebrew. Then reread my advice and then if your sure about continuing then go read that creating a RPG guide and come back when you have some substantial work which involves more then 20 "maps" and a basic battling system and then call that a WIP!

I may seem to be acting childish/knowitall, but I am not. I am merely hard headed and stubborn, so when I really decide I am doing something, I am doing it. That also includes this game. Also I am considering what you are saying. That is why I am looking at tile maps right now. I apologize for seeming like a punk. Please accept this apology, and I know this is a large undertaking, but I am determined, non, to prove you do not have to have been coding for years to make something people can like. I have the alpha purely for the purpose of showing what I have done and to show that there is something solid in this thread.

I have gotten the tile map printed to the screen. I still have to use single images for each tile though. I plan to work on that tomorrow because I am tired now. There is a screen attached to this post. All I have to do with the tile map is put it in the main script and get collisions working.

To judge something without even trying it first is just plain arrogant.

@OP: If you do continue this then at least make sure you have a solid code base first. In your current code, everything is hard coded; collisions, what images to load, room connections, etc. This is 'fine' and manageable on a small scale (a couple of rooms) but with an RPG that could a huge number of rooms with bespoke game play, your current code will not scale up nicely.

I agree with the others, start small. This doesn't necessary mean another type of game, just something more manageable. E.g a 4 room RPG.

For a 'game' which is very small, it has already gone over many iterations to make sure it is as generic and reusable as possible so when it does scale up, it is much easier and maintainable to do so.

Well, I wouldn't call it a 'game' per say. More Like something i thought would be good to use IN a game. More So after Looking through Some of they Lua Pokemon games. 1 inperticular had an hugely hard-coded battle system.
Though, i asked Myself 1 question, How Could i improve? Look at they First script & Compare to they 4th Script. But Wait until you see they 5th Script(which is just changing a couple of Design errors.) That 'game' is about 4.02 kb now. But i'll get it under 4kb. But my advice is start small, then move up.

Yaustar - the problem is all these noobs always do the exact some thing with every rpg wip they release. They make gross errors, refuses to listen to advice and pack up after a few days. They never bother to read your guide or the rpg guide which we now have before releasing something and then expect kindness. I gave him advice which you basically agreed with so there was no need for me to waste my time and bandwidth on this "thing" which is clearly not worth it by the post he made and the screenshots.

You do make a good point though. I said try something else. But perhaps if you still want the challenge of a rpg then you could make a 4/5 room simple thing and then try to make all these features for it and then expand it. Make a plan though and go through it step by step. List everything you need to do and what you will have to do to do them. A proper plan. Make sure your little 4 room rpg has lots of the features a rpg needs then perhaps post it on here for people to admire/criticize. One must have which most people do not do is a battling system.. At least have that before showing off.

Well this is a time were i must agree with mraillis. Though i like the concept the labeling is wrong seeing as a alpha is something that is 75-100% complete. this should be a pre-alpha (i just read yausters guide).

Kk, thanks for all your feedback, good or bad. Now that I have slept on it you NEED people to say really negative things. If you give up after those negative comments then you didn't have what it takes, but guess what. I am still here, so maybe there is a chance I can do it, and I plan to do my best. Also, I live to give people excuses to do thins XD.

Stop being a pompous moron. If you have no decent criticism to give, then I'd rather you don't post. That goes for everyone else who deems it appropriate to bash members with little experience in programming.
