[Release] Light Cycle 3D v3.01
This is from my website I updated recently, there you will find all my past, current and hidden projects as soon as they are on the internetz.
This is/was my entry into the PSP-Hacks Homebrew Idol 2 contest and has since been updated a few times with newer, better features and bug fixes alike.
Light Cycle 3D is a clone (NOT a port) of the light cycle racing concept from the hit movie Tron. This uses GLtron's models and a few textures. This uses Brick's LTE Lite Mod for rendering. As of v3.0 it supports up to 30 racers at once with 4 different speeds, 4 different grid sizes, 4 different skins come bundled and 2 game types with full mp3 playback support and customizable light cycle component colors.

Features:
* You can now turn while looking to the side and behind you.
* You can now skip the AI dukin' it out amongst themselves after you die by pressing Select (onscreen instructions say this as well)
* The gameplay now speeds up to 3x the pace after you die to speed things up - enjoy seeing who won in fast-forward.
* The race now starts when I say 'Go!', ready or not!
* Fireworks for the winner! Hazahh!
Bug Fixes & Tweaks:
* Fixed a bug where cycling through your mp3's too fast would cause a crash - it is no more, cycle as fast as you want
* Tweaked the lighting of many things to more illuminate the playing field and tracers/rails.
* Extended the flare trail you leave behind you
* More graphical tweaks here and there (moved the tracers down a bit, etc.)
* Adjusted sound effect levels to balance them with the music level.
* Replaced the name of an AI; it was tasteless, dry humor. I hope those who it upset can forgive me.

* Now you can race up to 29 opponents! Go nuts, first one to place first out of 30 get's a cookie...
* New variable grid size! Choose from small, normal, large and HUGE!
* New mini-map - toggle it on/off in-game with []!
* New type of AI added
* New gametype added - you may now choose from 'Classic' and 'Uber' (more on this later)
* Custom Skin support! Easy-to-use Modular skin system implemented. Read 'Skin.txt' in the folder for instructions. I'd like to thank 0m3GA ARS3NAL for the Virtual Reality skin from MGS I now have bundled with Light Cycle 3D v3.0
* more i'm just forgetting sorry
Tweaks/Improvements:
* Your view will no longer be obstructed by the boundaries, the camera is smoothly bound to the playing field
* 'Uber' AIs bust through other walls using the same 'explosion' sound but at a higher pitch - conservative and a satisfying sound
* Big boy 'recognizer' is now more bad-a$$ looking ^.^
* Speeds have been adjusted, insane is now insane-r
* Updated all the AI to pave the way to unrestricted movement so soon no more 90 degree-only turns
* MP3 Playback was a bit unstable and has been improved
* Updated Brick's LTE Lite Mod to 1.2, i was 2 versions behind! eek.
* lot more i just can't remember it all
Current Bugs:
* Same as the initial release, there is a graphical bug in the engine (so i've deduced) that mucks with the diffuse color of the model component when it comes time to apply it and render said component (this applies to all models - tracers/rails and light cycles alike)
Gametypes (at the moment 2, but the system is there for more):
* Classic - the good ol' classic tron, race around do your stuff
* Uber - this is a much more difficult game; your enemies are godly in both brains and bronze. They can and will blow through any wall in their way should they have to but only if they have to. Not to mention they are able to take quite a beating as well, but their deaths are spectacular sights with huge effects (what do you expect when a god dies ;p). They are easily distinguishable by their massive light cycles and huge flare trails they leave behind. Don't be intimidated with your little thing (err...) it's not the size that counts, it's how you use it.
I challenge anyone to beat 29 enemies in the Uber gametype! who knew chaos was so much fun eh..

UPDATE v3.01:
Decent update.
* You can now control the distance on the camera from the cycle with Up and Down on the D-pad
* You can now control the height of the camera from the cycle with the analog stick up and down
* Reset camera distance and height with O while in-game
* 'The Void' by 0m3GA ARS3NAL skin now comes bundled with the game (along with Virtual Reality)
* Tracers/rails are now randomly colored til the main graphical bug is fixed
* Fixed up 'uber' gametype, no longer can you go through walls and walls will destroy properly
* You may now toggle MP3 looping with TRIANGLE in the Pause menu in-game!
* MP3 Playback should be much more stable now (yes finally lol)
* more i just can't remember!

Thanks all for the positive feedback :)
I've made a small change - no longer will it display the filepath of the mp3 but the track name (if it exists, else it'll be the file path). I don't intend to upload and change all teh links for this small fix, but I will say i've changed the link on my site so if you really must have it to put the icing on the cake get it there lol. I'd love to try it, but it comes up as corrupted data on 3.52 M33 firmware.
Tried in GAME, GAME150 and GAME352 folders with the same result.
Even if the game only works on a later firmware version, I'd expect to see the icon,
and have the PSP at least try to launch it... haven't had this problem with a HB before..

It's not just this version, but the last two as well.
Funny I can open the eboot on the PC with PSPBrew and see the icons, but it doesn't show in the XMB.
Might try launching with irshell.

Art - that is very peculiar.. Works on mine, jsharrad's, people on IRC, on MSN, even my test PSP with a fresh install from all the download links.. I don't know what to say - and yea strange how it shows in PSPBrew fine but not PSP. So it isn't corrupt, something PSP side eek
Oh and guys - w00t my bandwidth is back! those screens are hawt!

I don't know if i made this clear or not but this is N O T a port of anything. This is a cloen of the light cycle racing concept found in the Tron movie using a few models and textures from the PC game GLtron. This is developed using Brick's LTE Lite Mod as a render engine - nothing else.

I'm afraid ver3.0 failed for me, SG57, and Version 2.0 and prior worked properly. (In earlier versions, I had an MP3 crash and some lock-ups on I believe a stacking up of the explosion effects, all things I'm sure you've come across too.) The game boots through the application verification and runs through the developer page, but it no longer gets to the title screen or option menu; instead, it fades to black from the developer page and stays locked in black until the machine shuts itself off.
I'll try it at home with my other PSP, I have two on different firmwares since I've experienced a lot of firmware troubles. My PSP here is running version 3.40 OE-A and I have tried GAME and GAME150 folders, is there anything else I can do to help you bug check your project?

Looks Awesome!
I love GLTron and have been wanting someone to port this to the psp for a very longtime! The game looks great. The download link in the attachement isn't working. None of the Light Cycle 3D V3.0 downloads work for me. The ones that show up on the psp load the dashshack logo then the screen turns black and the psp crashes. Pleas Fix it. Thankyou so much for a light cycle game for the psp.

Hmm the crashing is due to the MP3 playback and no doubt because everyone is on different firmware it's loading different version of the modules. I really don't know what to say considering many can play full featured myself including without any crashes whatsoever ;\ Can i ask what firmware you all are on?
All i can say is this has been extensively tested on psp firmware 5.00 m33, any other not so much and i really don't know what to say ;\ (5.xx kernel)Last edited by SG57; 06-18-2009 at 07:43 PM.

I have a PSP Slim with 5.00m33-6. I have no idea why it isn't working. I would love to play it. I start the light cycle game it shows the first logo and then goes to a black screen and crashes.
Edit: How would I go about fixing the MP3 Modules?

It could be the fatmsmod, 1.50 Kernal Enabled, and many other things. Do these apply to you?

Here i'll have a new eboot for you to try here in a bit. I am goin out for a few minute and will be back. I think i may have the problem pin pointed..
Also i found a few bugs i need to fix and fix 'uber' to PSPnoobmod's liking lol
if all goes as planend should have a patched up one tonight as v3.01

I do have the FatMs mod, along with leda. I also have the ultimate vsh menu. I think thouse are the only things I have done to my psp flash, other then the firmware. I look forward to the v3.01! I can't wait! I am so glad that you are continueing this project!

Yes v3.01 has quite a few additions as well (who would've thought there was room for more additions!) and tweaks and fixes (mp3 finally!).
Soon I shall ready the release (once my gf gets off the phone grrrrr
)
