Default [RELEASE] PSPedict V0.1 (Japanese Dictionary)

Hi all

I'm a new dev to these forums, and would like to present
my first released homebrew app, PSPedict V0.1.

What is it?
PSPedict is a general Japanese <-> English dictionary with
68,785 Japanese entries. You can search in English via the
On Screen Keyboard (OSK), or in Japanese using Hiragana/
Katakana. It is also possible to search using Kanji from
a Kanji Popup window, or when navigating through the
Kanjidic file (6354 entries).

You can save and load found sets, and store up to 2000
entries in each of the four study lists.

Options are included to sort finds by original order, length, or
reading.

See the readme for full details and installation instructions.

I have tested it on a PSP 1000 with CFW M33-6 and
5.50 GEN-B (FULL) without any problems.

At this stage, I plan to include deletion of found sets
and possibly include support for other files such as
proper names, computer terms, etc...

Thanks/Credits
==============
Jim Breen for EDICT and KANJIDIC.
Brunni for OSLib.
Sakya for OSLib Mod.
BenHur for Intrafont.
DAX for his excellent CFW. Legend.
And, anyone who is kind enough to download the file
or post a comment.

Note, PSPedict is now up to version 0.3.
[RELEASE] PSPedict V0.3

Plese note that PSPedict V0.2 has now been released. See the thread:
[RELEASE] PSPedict V0.2 (Japanese Dictionary)

Link to V0.1:
Download PSPedict_v0.1.rar from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way

Some pictures: Thanks to tinmanx for help with the plugin.

Cheers!

Nice application, is there a way to use the 5.00+ OSK? I have seen a few applications that have come out since 5.00 that use an OSK, but non of them use the full OSK in 5.00.

Here are a few screens using Coolj's screen.prx:

This app looks awesome. I actually have a test in Japanese tomorrow (unfortunately its in 古語).

I really look forward to the progression of this program. I will let you know if I come across any problems or ideas I would like to see implemented. I don't know if you need licenses for the other dictionary types (kenkyusha is one of the best IMO).

Keep up the good work!

Thank you very much for this application! I tested it and here are some thoughts:

1) Switching to Kanjidic was very logical as there was an option for that. Maybe switching from Kanjidic to PSPedict could work exactly the same way (only the third symbol with a different image and text). I found it a little unlogical that by pressing the [O] you could return to PSPedict, but not back to the Kanjidic. I also noticed by cancelling the text entry you are forced to return to PSPedict, but this is probably an unwanted side effect.

2) By searching something simple shows too many results. However, by playing with options help you to find what you want to. There could be a selectable function to show only exact results. For example if you search <hiragana>hi</hiragana> with the option selected, it won't show results like <hiragana>asahi</hiragana>, but only results like fire, day and so on. It would be very nice if PSPedict would remember the choosed options after the closing of the application.

3) Interface was good and I found the exit menu to be amusing. It is great to have another kind of Japanese dictionary after the 1.50 kernel PSP Professional Japanese Dictionary. Excellent homebrew application! I'll be definitely looking forward how the project goes on.

Thanks everyone for your great feedback.

tinmanx, good question about the full OSK. There were only very basic options in OSLib Mod, but I briefly looked at a post somewhere about the OSK data struct, and would need to have a play with it to see if that's possible. It's a good idea. Oh, and thanks for the screenshots. I tried one plugin and it didn't work, so I got impatient and just used a camera. Thanks.

Zaf9670, I look forward to any ideas/suggestions you might have.

Thanks batanen for all your suggestions:

The reason you always return to PSPedict is probably due to my lack of experience as a programmer more than anything. It was just easier that way. I'll think about a better way to manage moving between the lists.

I had implimented the "Match whole string" with only English in mind. I didn't do this for Hiragana/Katakana because it would be difficult to detect just the intended search word in a multiple word string compared with those same characters found in another word. For example, matching the characters "inu" (dog) in the string "norainu" (stray dog) makes sense if your intending to search for (dog), but finding the same string in "yatoinushi" (employer) doesn't make sense (the Kanji would have to be known).

I guess if I used the "Match whole string" with Hiragana/Katakana, I could simply match just the whole string only, meaning if any other characters were found, the match would fail. So if you searched "inu" it would only find strings that had nothing but "inu" in it. That should be easy to do, but is that what you mean?

Lastly, I think a simple ini file type setup would solve the problem about remembering the search/sort options. I actually considered it, but didn't know if it would be useful. I'll have a play with this.

This was actually a very good feature!

Yes, it would be the desired effect. In an occasion where you know the exact reading of the kanji, this would make finding the meaning a little faster. Sort by length is useful too, but finding all kanji that are read for example ひ, one would have to look the first three pages as the results are apparently ordered by the kanji.

.ini-file would be a good solution.

Thank you for your time and replying!
