    Hi guys,

    I updated kgsws's port of PSP Legacy. Here are the release notes:


    PSP Legacy (Third Release) by Duke

    Features added:

    - Music support (MP3)
    - Volume sliders
    - Cheat menu
    - Turbo (Player Setup)
    - Improved save game names
    - Reorganized HUD

    Bugs fixed:

    - End of level screens completely fixed (stats, animations, splats, arrow, sounds (Heretic))
    - Restored original Heretic end of level behavior (fraction stats, no rolling count)
    - Intermission screens completely fixed (added missing text, increased width and max patches)
    - End of game screens completely fixed (stretched, fixed scroll)
    - DM and Coop score screens completely fixed (redesigned)
    - Dozens of graphics stretched/centered
    - Fixed map selection list (Heretic episode 4 and 5 did the same thing)
    - Added Heretic bonus maps (E4M1 in 3 episode version, E6M1, E6M2, and E6M3 in 5 episode version)
    - Fixed Heretic menu sounds
    - Fixed DOOM 2 and Heretic quit sounds
    - Restored Heretic skill 5 behavior (no confirm, no respawn)
    - Restored Heretic death sound behavior (wimpy, normal, crazy, gib)
    - Fixed Heretic tome and flight spinning icons
    - Fixed Heretic netgame weapon kill messages (uses its own now, not DOOM's)
    - Fixed bug improperly reporting tome + mace kill as telefrag
    - Fixed bug causing all multiplayer servers to be skill 3
    - Fixed netgame timelimit
    - Fixed Connect Server menu (spacing, name overflow)
    - Fixed menus escaping to wrong menu
    - Fixed text spacing in status messages and console
    - Adjusted sky textures
    - Can no longer end game if not playing
    - Loading empty game no longer ends demo sequence


    Because the music support is for MP3s, you are free to add whatever music you like to the game now. However, if you're like me and you enjoy the original music, I have already created a music pack with the original OPL synth tunes from DOS. It's a little on the large side, but if space is an issue for you, you can always grab an MP3 converter and lower the bitrate (currently 192kbps).

    The automap and rendering bugs have not been touched on because I don't know pspgu and don't have the time to learn it right now.

    I have no plans for future updates.

    All I can say about the music is that many websites on the internet, for example the Videogame Music Preservation Foundation www dot vgmpf dot com/Game.php?Id=DOOM-DOS have the music hosted and there does not seem to be any legal issues with it.

    Hey man i added the Doom 1 (demo) as doom1.wad and the Heretic as heretic.wad but i get this error:

    That error message should only appear if you're trying to load pwads with the shareware version of the game, so doom1.wad or heretic1.wad. This wasn't allowed in the original game. Let me know if you're not loading pwads.

    The doom1.wad you got from there is most likely shareware DOOM, and you can't use pwads with the shareware versions of DOOM or Heretic.

    The heretic.wad you got from there is some sort of Heretic for DOOM 2 mod. If you rename heretic.wad to doom2.wad and load it up, you'll see what I mean.

    Damn. The music pack is no longer up: "bandwidth exceeded" error.

    Sorry, I'm having issues with my hosting company who doesn't like answering tickets. If I don't get it sorted in the next day, I'll find a place where I can temporarily provide it so you can create a mirror. I would just send it to you now, but my upload speed is terribly slow and it would take 6 hours.

    this is great work,i like it better than the previous ports ,much more polished …
    one question how do you get the pwad to load in the game?they load in the menu(4 slots) but then when the game starts how or where do you choose them?i have never played with pwad sorry if its a noob question
    and why is ther a limit in the # of p wads …i can only see 16
    is it possible to have more iwads than the 5 (doom1 doom2 doom2plutonium doom2tnt and heretic) or different

    nick- I'm not sure what to tell you. Make sure you have an authentic iwad and that it's in the Legacy folder, not the pwad folder, so "legacy", not "legacy\pwads".

    rico- Most of the game use isn't explained because it's pretty well-known by now. Pwads are made for a specific game mode (DOOM, DOOM 2, or Heretic) and a specific map. They replace the map. Some pwads replace multiple maps. You have to know which one(s) it does. A lot of them are made for the first map, so start a new game in different game modes and see if the map is different. Otherwise, hopefully they came with a readme that tells you. If not, you'll have to scrounge around for a wad editor you can use to open it and determine the game and map it is for. To use a pwad, choose the game it's for, select it, and when you're in the game, warp to the level it was made for. As for additional iwads, PSP Legacy only officially supports DOOM, DOOM 2, Plutonia, TNT, and Heretic. Other iwads may be usable, but there's no guarantee. If it's a completely different game mode (ie: Strife), it probably won't work, but if the iwad is modified but runs under a supported game mode (ie: DOOM, DOOM2, or Heretic), it will probably work. All you can do is experiment. Rename the iwad you want to try to the game it's for, so DOOM2.WAD if it's for the DOOM 2 game mode. As for pwad slots, this was the behavior when I started working on the port (probably implemented by kgsws), and I just left it that way. I guess most people don't use that many pwads simultaneously.

    Pwad = patch wad. It's used for addons, so levels, sounds, music, etc. You don't need them, but if you're tired of the game, you can play user-created maps.

    thanks for your answer...i did what you said and it worked ,renaming the iwad worked ,but some user maps(pwad) dont because they have to many sprites(exceed 256 )or something and some textures dont appear but i will continue to experiment ....

    Hmmmm...

    Too bad you have no plans for updating this any further. It really does play much smoother than all the other PSP DOOM ports.

    The only improvements I think would be useful, would be:

    - an option to use the original HUD
    - have it return to PSP Legacy when you quit a game, not return to the xmb

    Also, in DOOM1 demo, when the lights go off in like the third mission, it gets way too dark. you are normally supposed to be able to see a little bit. but it gets pitch black on this port 0_o

    Other than that, this is one awesome port of DOOM !

    Hopefully you will decide to release one last update.


    OH - one more thing:
    I am 95% certain that DOOM 1 and DOOM 2 are both abandonware now.
    Which would mean they can be freely distributed :)

    Yeah, there were several things I explored as possible feature updates when doing this release. When you get knee-deep in the code, you start doing things simply because you're already in there and you can. There's tons of things that could be done with this port, given the time. I simply didn't want to spend months doing them since I have other projects lined up, and they weren't all that mission-critical. Each time you want to add or fix something, it can easily extend the project completion date by another week or two, since coding is often like peeling an onion. So, I focused only on fixing things that were broken, and implementing support for the most requested features that were missing, such as music and cheats. Everything else is just icing on the cake: the original hud, additional mod support, etc. Factors involved in my decision were mainly that the PSP is more toward the end of its life cycle, and that the next gen cpu would be much faster, allowing for a better source port to ported to the platform (sorry, legacy isn't my favorite port, lot of messy code and things that were never finished or fully realized).

    On the note of the lighting, this was also something I was considering fiddling with -- the conversion of the old lighting to the hardware-rendered lighting. I felt certain areas that should have been darker were too light, and as you said, vice versa. However, due to personal time constraints and the fact that the DOOM on PSP experience is not 100% authentic as it is and already requires a grain of mental salt to be fully enjoyed "as it was", I didn't find this all that necessary. Also, some of it is completely subjective, as one could easily claim that the inherent nature of the original, 256-color lighting and/or the gamma correction made it possible to see via wall texture highlights when the developers may have otherwise wanted it pitch black. So, who really knows.

    As far as abandonware, in most cases the work is not actually in the public domain, it's just that the current copyright holders don't care to enforce their ownership since the game is old and they're willfully not supporting it. I am not personally against copying it anyway, just be aware that it's most likely not technically legal to do so.

    I would just like to add that all my WADS are now loading fine on PSP Legacy

    I was just not loading them right.
    For 007 and most of my other WADS, you need to load DOOM 2 as the main wad, and then your other wad as the Pwad... I had never got used to the process, as the last DOOM port I was using, would allow you to just load a pWad, and it would assume that DOOM 2 was the Iwad - so it would automatically load it ;)

    So DOOM legacy is loading all my wads fine.
    I just wasn't loading them correctly.
    My apologies for any confusion.

    One question - Does this support Zdoom?
    That is one thing I have not tried yet...

    Also, I am going to downsample the music, and upload a smaller, downsampled music pack for everyone :)
