I have searched for hours and was quite surprised to find that no one has created a tool which lets people play Ad Hoc games over a local network. Now that might not sound like a very useful idea at first, but with a simple VPN tool like Hamachi you can set up a fake LAN network to connect with other PC's over the internet. So essentially you could have your own private Ad Hoc party.
XLink Kai allows people to play Ad Hoc games over the internet, but the players all connect to one central server (I assume). What I want to see, is an app that will allow players to connect directly to each other. The PSP's will communicate via a LAN/VPN network and they connect to the PC's either by a USB cable or a dongle. I would prefer to use a cable.
The AdhocToUSB plugin streams the Ad Hoc data over a USB cable (for use with xlink). I can't imagine it would be too hard to take advantage of that plugin for this idea. The app need only be very basic, with maybe a single lobby which lists all the clients in the local network (or perhaps the ability to add 'friends' by their IP, labeled as online or offline).
If the friend is online and their PSP is connected, there could be a little image next their name/ip to indicate their status. I'm not sure if it's possible to detect which game they are playing, but if not, they could simply update their personal 'status label' to indicate which game they are playing and if they are ready to play.
Finally, there should be a connect button displayed under every friend who has their PSP connected. When you choose to connect to any of your friends it will open up a communication channel between the PSP's, essentially simulating the effect of them being near each other. The PC's in the network are used to send data between the PSP's.
By using Hamachi in conjunction with a program like I'm proposing would allow anyone to easily play Ad Hoc games with their friends who live on the other side of the world. I find xlink is far too difficult for all my friends to set up and it doesn't work properly half the time. Ad Hoc games are designed to be played over an Ad Hoc type of network.
A good idea?
EDIT: I should state that what I'm requesting is clearly not a homebrew app, but is a PC program (preferably for Windows). Although it will require some use/modification of AdhocToUSB plugin if it uses a cable.
