    hey Aphonia how long did it take you to be a decent coder?
    A decent coder? About 6 months. That's if you spend about an hour a day coding. A good coder? About a year.

    The apps that come with luaplayer aren't that great to learn and expand on, the best are applications that do something similar to what you want to do, maybe having other featurews too, then see how its all integrated

    Hey everyone- just a quick pregunta. When I eventually attempt to make an English-Spanish dictionary for Todo Espanol, what would be the most effective way to do that? I'd have to type up a document w/ all of the words, wouldn't I? I couldn't imagine any alternatives- that'll take a long time!

    I disagree with that (although it depends on how you define decent and good coders). For industry level, I would say at least 2 years developing a wide range of projects both individually and in groups of various sizes. For me, its taken 3 years to be good enough for the industry and another to really know my material in terms of the programming concepts and development practises in additional to my C++ skills. Even then, I am still learning every day.

    The language doesn't matter, I was referring to actually being a good programmer in general. Once you grasp the concepts of the a paradigm, you could pick up most high level languages in the same or similar paradigm ( Lua, Python, C#, Java ) quite easily in a month. The lower level languages ( C, C++, ASM ) will take longer due to the nature of the languages (Some would argue C++ would take years if not longer to fully master).

    When I said 'good', I didn't mean that he could run out and get a programming job. I meant that he'd be able to create some good homebrew games.

    yaustar pretty much answered your question, but it doesn't matter about the language. The important thing is to be able to understand and have a good knowledge of the Game Programming Theory. Once you understand that, you can easily move to any other language. I suggest that you read up on the Game Programming Theory, as it will help you code.

    so would i do "if background3.x = true then
    animation()
    or something like that
    if Background3.x <= 480 and background3.x >= -480 then
    animation()
    end

    That will call animation() as long as background3 is anywhere onscreen. You can tweak the numbers if you want animation() called only if background3 is mostly onscreen (try <= 240 and >= -240 for a good example).

    hey Aphonia how long did it take you to be a decent coder?
    It hasn't happened yet. I've never made anything worth releasing.

    I agree "(Game) Programming Theory" is a bit of a buzzword. Game programming is no different to normal programming.

    Read "Coding Complete" or "Pragmatic Programmer" at least to get an idea of common programming practises and 'thoery'.

    heh, my bad about the readme. once you have dofiled the lib, you can use its functions. call them just like any other function you would use in lua, with the correct parameters. here is a quick tut. it covers loading. blitting is much simpler, and you should be able to figure it out on your own.

    I have a problem with my code. The whole code is too long, so i'll post the snippet.
    Code:
    --function for complete compounding process
    functionCompound()
    	--start compounding interest
    	while gt - gtd > 1 do
    		functionCompoundStart()
    	end
    	--finish compounding interest
    	if gt - gtd == 1 then
    		functionCompoundFinish()
    	end
    end
    The error I get is '<eof>' expected near 'end'. What does this mean?

    Lord_Artorius, I can't tell for sure because you didn't post the whole code, but I don't think you're defining your functions right, because this works:
    Spoiler for code:
    Code:
    gt=70
    gtd=1

    function CS () --Made all this stuff up just to check it
    if gt - gtd > 1 then
    gtd = gtd-1
    end
    end

    function CF()
    gt=70
    gtd=1
    end

    function Compound()
    	--start compounding interest
    	while gt - gtd > 1 do
    		CS()
    	end
    	--finish compounding interest
    	if gt - gtd == 1 then
    		CF()
    	end
    end

     while true do
    screen:clear()

    Compound()

    screen.waitVblankStart()
    screen.flip()
    end

    Put a space between 'function' and what you want the function to be called, and call the function with just the name, not 'function name' or 'functionname'.

    Also, <eof> stands for 'end of file.'
