Talking New EBOOT loader for v2.0 firmware

Thought you might like to know about a work-in-progress EBOOT loader for v2.0 firmware, that improves on the existing v0.1 loader.

This now works with a much larger range of homebrew than the previous loader, and includes diagnostic information if it has problems loading a particular EBOOT.

The main limitation is that it does NOT support kernel-mode applications.

I'd be very interested to hear from people with their test results - both for interesting homebrew that does now work, and also for any EBOOTs that still aren't working.

You can download it here.

The readme file inside the ZIP contains installation instructions.

There is no 64kB cap.

And yes, a lot of homebrew (but not all) will now work on 2.0. It's still a bit early to guess at what proportion does work, but that proportion is definitely going up all the time.

Is there a list of which homebrew stuff that already runs?

And maybe a tuturial how to change your homebrew code to be 2.0 compliant?

Is there still stuff that just cant be changed to run because of user mode limitation (something like changing frequency I presume)?

Quetz67: The readme in the zip file contains a list of the apps I've tested against, which isn't huge - mostly I was just testing the concept rather than trying to run anything very interesting.

One thing I noticed that doesn't work (which is a real shame) is LUAPlayer - but I'm hopeful that I can get that at least partially working, to open up access to the large collection of LUA apps that are available.

I will at some point add some info about how to make the apps compliant - but the main thing is that you can't use any kernel-mode code.

Reap3r : Did you try turning off and retrying a second time? What's the error you get when it doesn't work?

I tried running the PSPuzzle 0.7 eboot (listed as compatible) but it didn't work.
It got further than any other eboot I've tried though. It gets to the point where it says press x to load or o to dump but after pressing x it does nothing. I noticed that the front end of the game seemed to have loaded in the bottom right of the screen but it was extremely small making the text unreadable.

I'm using a european 2.0 psp.

Anyone tried the Snes Emulator with this? Literally, that's all I'm waiting for on 2.0 homebrew.

Axehead: I'm surprised you're having trouble with PSPuzzle, I tested v0.7 again on my PSP last night and it worked fine. Try rebooting your PSP, and try again.

There seem to be a few reliability issues at the moment - i.e. some apps work some of the time, but not at other times. I'm hoping to add some patches to fix some of that tonight - in particular:

- display mode reliability : seems like that might be what's wrong with PSPuzzle, I have an idea that should help.
- extra diagnostic info to help with crashes
- better CWD environment setting, should help with
- lack of sound in Attack of the Mutants
- (hopefully) lockups at ROM selection screen in NesterJ

Campbell FF : I doubt that file assistant will be able to load EBOOTs on 2.0. In fact, chances are that it needs kernel-mode to do that on the 1.5 firmware, in which case it won't even be able to start under 2.0.

Just released a new version (0.3) to my website.

Main changes:
- adds a file chooser to let you load an EBOOT.PBP from anywhere on your memory stick.
- more stable startup code - should start more programs (such as PSPuzzle, that someone had trouble with) first time, also fixes sound on Attack of the Mutants.
- supports files with multiple program segments

Just been trying out the new version and unfortunately it doesn't work with anything (including PSPuzzle). It does the same thing each time with every eboot I've tried (and I've tried a lot). The loader boots and allows me to change directories and select an eboot but when I press x to load it, the screen goes blank except for the 'EBOOT Loader v0.3 by Fanjita (Based on work by Saotome)' message at the top and the psp shutsdown after about 30 seconds.

Have you tested it on a european 2.0 PSP?

No, I've checked at least a dozen times and everything is exactly how it should be as described in the readme.txt

I only have access to a European 2.0 PSP, so yes

I really don't understand why it isn't working for you. Are you running the loader from a completely fresh reboot? IF so, do you have custom wallpaper set? That's the only thing I can think of that might change the environment enough to throw things out.

The next enhancement I want to make is to add debug info when a crash like this occurs, maybe that will help you out.

It never works, it always litterally shuts off my PSP when I run homebrew, even ones that have been confirmed working.
