If the code is not freely available and you haven't followed the rules governed by the licensing method the author has used to protect his work.. than yes it's wrong.

Studying a code and rewriting into you code is fine, If anyone disputes that it's a legal case. I'm speaking about any software that's everbeen made. Even windows is a rip of macOS and more recently there was that thing with BDnet versus Battle.Net

just look at it for examples if you need to know a thing or too, but dont just copy the whole thing and change one or two things

It depends...like lot's of the people in the PSP dev scene they are giving out their source to be freely used and studied. The thing is, don't look at a side scrolling shooter, and say hey I wanna make one, and then grab someones source and change the graphics and a few other minor things and say it's your game.

Instead you should have a goal in mind, and then seek out the tools you need to complete the task. Really that's what programming is, solving problems with various tools at your disposal. So if you grab a function from someones code to draw a .bmp to the screen, great...make sure you understand what it's doing...the big thing is comming up with your own ideas on how to accomplish your goal.....

I say that it's alright to copy a few things but not too much of it, because then you're pretty much just stealing the code. Unless of course, you say it's a mod of that app and give the creator some credits!

I say you can copy small functions like displying png's and music and stuff like that. But you should come up with most of the code your self.

look, every budding programmer does it...
ive done it myself in the past and without any guilt...
but whenever ive done that, ive included the credits as a part of the program...

i dont see any wrong in using someone else's freely available code and making it better...

but stealing someone's code and changing a few lines and showing it off as your own is bad... thats why many people dont release the source code
