Default Geometry Wars-type shooter

Hi all,

I'm fairly new to the PSP, and have been spending the last week or so learning how to play with its innards. I've come up with this little game, which is a 'port' of Vector Infector, a game being put together by one of me mates. It's a Geometry Wars inspired game. Basically, you have to kill everything that moves, except for the shiny little gems, which you collect. The more gems you get, the higher your score multiplier, and the bigger your guns get.

It's still VERY beta so any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Controls:

Dpad or analoggy to move
Shape buttons to fire
Ltrigger = switch between robotron-esque and straight-ahead shooting
Rtrigger = freeze movement for aiming when shooting straight ahead
Select = dump screenshot to MS root (just raw, sorry!)
Start = cycle music (only 1 track though, so never mind)

You can grab it from here.

Cheers,
Smayds

Thumbs up

I really enjoyed it! Looks good, controls are easy.. a stupid amount of lives 49,999 for testing  I'd change the aura that comes off of gems when you collect them.. its like a whiteout and it's so easy to run into an enemy.. would be come too annoying. Also I want BIG guns and with big guns come lots of enemies.. so I can mow them down other than that its yet another great scrolling shooter!

Your game is awsome!
It would be good if you make a GEOMETRY WARS mode so we can play just like geometry wars. Are you planing on something like that? i hope that you consider it.

Great game! You got a site or anything? If you're continuing development i'd gladly donate.

That was unbelieveably FUN!

Wow, what a sweet engine.

All it needs now is:
+ Highscores
+ Levels
+ Regulated Lives
+ More weapons
+ More soundtracks

I would donate as well dude if he continues with what he has done already, let alone make it better. This is a perfect adaptation of the real deal, minus the lyrics in the song. I am so excited over this project. You have no idea. Before I got my psp I almost bought a 360 core just for Geometry Wars. I made a thread on Xbox-Scene about this project. Maybe die hard players could add some good advice. Long live Vector Infector!

This was a port so its not all his/her work. (Sorry can't know if its a guy or girl just by a forum post) So they could add features then it would no longer be a port. Just a though :-p

Hey all,

Thanks for the feedback Every little bit helps!

Right, issues... I have no idea why it doesn't work on 2.0, I stuck to Fanjita's guidelines so it must be something in mikmod or libmad. Or something to do with the fact that there are about half a dozen threads running. I'll look into it. I don't know whether I'll get it running on 2.5+ though, as I have no intention of upgrading my PSP to try it out :icon_wink

I'm making this game to be a 'clone' of VI, not GW, but I have relatively free reign in the AI department. The enemies will try to avoid your shots and home in a little more enthusiastically when it's done. I'm also looking at that lovely spotted moving background in GW with interest...

The music that was included in the beta is just a random track I grabbed. There's a complete soundtrack being done for the PC version, which I'm allowed to nick

In a couple days I should have a mostly-finished version for everyone to enjoy. Any feature requests etc, just post away!

Cheers,
Smayds

(BTW: I'm doing this for fun and my own enjoyment. Donations are a very nice gesture, but unnecessary, thanks!)

EDIT: I'm a he, Ravine

i get that impression with many developers

they don't seek fame, they don't make a big deal (even when it actually comes out and turns out to be a huge success, -they tend to come across as very modest)

congrats smayds, you're a good man

Doesn't appear to work well with SeiPSPTool... It loads up, gets stuck at a white screen and crashes.

Still, I'm looking forward to playing it.

Seems like it's a small bug with this working with 2.0
It doesn't freeze or anything but it just goes back to the loader's menu.
Not sure but maybe that can help?

P.S. I've never played Geometry Wars but this port looks awesome :icon_smil

I'm trying to sort out the 2.0 incompatibility now. The game just exits if it gets an error, so it could be one of many, many things I need a hand sorting this, as I don't want to upgrade... call it nerves. I've already done the downgrade, and 1.5 it is staying!

Anyone who has 2.0, version 0.9 of Fanjita's marvellous loader, and some patience  please send me an email. It would be massively appreciated.

Cheers,
Smayds

10 points that man, LOL

The bomb display is just there because it looks ghey without it.

Anybody with a 2.0 PSP and a willingness to help? Anyone? Pweeeeeze? All I need is for you to tell me the contents of a debug message, ROFL. Email or PM's are fine...

EDIT: jeez, I need a bit of patience. Thought I'd posted that request hours ago... Where is my mind at

Hey, a couple of things I would work on:

+ a weapon update system, now after 3 rounds you have this mega-weapon that destroys all, no challenge

+ I would make the blasts smaller, after u got the mega -weapon all u see is one big blast

+ keep up the good work

Comment on front news page says...
Quote:
RUN GOOD ON 2.0
By lordmetal1, at 5:32 PM
But, _I_ can't get it working in 2.0 with Eboot loader using v0.8. I get most other things HB running.

FYI - It does this:
From v0.8 EBoot selector screen, --> "X" (A Little MStick action here)
Gets to... EBBOT Loader v0.8 by Fanjita....
...............Press X to Start the program etc, screen.
Then I ...Press X, it stays on this screen. ..(no MStick action here.)
Tries to load, for 5 seconds, on the "press X screen" then clears this screen, then flashes up first two lines of Eboot Loader Message.. REAL QUICKLY
"EBOOT Loader v0.8 by Fanjita
(based on work by Saotome)"

Then ges back to EBOOT selector.

I dont see any debug messages. dang!
I know this is old eBoot loader. Others seem to have no luck with 0.9.
I tried both, 1.0 and 1.5 eboots just in case. (Same results)
I have the "res" folder (resources folder?) in the same folder as the eBoot. Just like the FW1.5 version is pre-setup.

wot did lordmetal1 do that everyone else seems to have missed?

JasonJ,

I spotted that comment too, I think lordmetal1 needs to lay off the weed

Can you please try the attachment? It'll flash you an error code (well it should), and from this I'll be able to see where the error lies. Just copy over the existing eboot.

This is very irritating, as I made sure I followed all the guidelines Fanjita set out. The only thing that I can think of is that I've spawned too many threads, but is 3 plus the game's main thread too many?

Cheers.

This is just for 2.0 users. If you have 1.5, there's no need to download/install this as it just reports an error code when it fails to start. As it works just fine under 1.5, then aside from deleting the graphics and sound files, you won't get an error when you load it
