Default Request for Source Code - New Project, Developers Please Read

Hey fellow developers, I have had an idea in my head for a while and now I'm ready to convert it to a tangible project.

The project is a development site that will house fully commented PSP Applications for educational purposes and contain tutorials regarding PSP Development. It would aim to be a central hub for developers who are looking to expand their programming abilities.

Here's what I'm envisioning:
A sort of a wiki where developers can submit code, either commented or uncommented and then other users can expand upon the comments to give clear documentation. The site would also feature a help board where people can ask questions about PSP Development.

What I need though is developers who have released their code to the public (or who would be willing to contribute code to it) to get in contact with me.

I would also need some people who would be willing to help comment out code that is submitted. And possibly some people who would be willing to write tutorials.

What I'd like to know from you guys is
a) do you think there is a need for this? and
b) would you like to help?

I personally will be migrating my tutorial series over to the new website and submitting the code of applications that I have worked on.

Also, as a final note, I have also been playing around with the idea of offering bounties for certain examples of code; bounties have worked well for the Linux community and they may work well here.

Funding for the site would be provided by me (hopefully), but if you'd like to contribute, feel free.

Edit:

A) Yes definitely, I've thought about this many times myself.
B) Yes.

I would love to have Danzel comment his Peldet source to a sort of documentation, I'd run hog wild with WiFi apps I could comment on it a little bit.

Good Idea, although commenting someone elses poorly formated code can be a nightmare...especially if like me, they use tons of unorthodox methods :P

I only have 2 "substantial" programs that I can submit....they are semi-commented already and I try to format nicely...

Great LostJared =)

harleyg - Is your server dedicated? Because if not, I already have a shared hosting account at dreamhost that I'm not even scratching the surface of, I have 20 gigs of space (of which I'm only using 100 megs :P) and a terabyte/month of bandwith (of which I'm not even using a gig).

Edit: I also just realized that we will probably need someone to design the site. I can program it, but (as is evident by my tutorials) I can't design worth crap :P

People should really be commenting their own code, after all they (should be) the ones who understand it the best.
I'll be willing to add some documented code examples to the site. (wifi, libcurl, libxml2)

I think a wiki would suit this the best, as its easy to modify everything on there
I would recommend dokuwiki (like on http://wiki.ps2dev.org/) for the project.

@soccerPMN - peldet was written before the pspsdk had proper wifi support, the next version (if ever released) will of moved to the pspsdks wifi code.
There is standard unix sockets support in the pspsdk now days, an example is available in the pspsdk (pspdev/psp/sdk/samples/net/simple) check that out.
The only real difference between using sockets on psp and on pc is that you need to initialize and connect to the wifi.
PM me if you need help with wifi stuff (or find me on irc in #hamlan on irc.undernet.org)

I was thinking I might register psp-programming pspprogramming and psprogramming just so that there would be no confusion and no knock offs. But I don't quite have the $ to do it lol.

@cyanide - I'm not sure what mediawiki offers for this sort of site that is better than dokuwiki.
I mean, dokuwiki was made for this sort of thing:

What does mediawiki offer us?

1] many wikis are based on mediawiki...i.e. people know how to use it better
2] it looks much more complete, tho i dunno about either of their features.

it was just an opinion, no need to jump on me from behind and choke me

@cyanide - lol, didn't mean to startle you, I was just wondering why you wanted mediawiki.

Both really are about equal (mediawiki doesn't natively support code syntax hightlighting, but there is an extension for it).
The syntax for both is relatively similar and both are fairly simple.
I was actually going to suggest both in my post before, but I like the style of dokuwiki, so I just posted that

Hello,

There is allready such a web site online: http://svn.ps2dev.org/
From that link, you can browse many well documented PSP projects. I believe the SVN admins will provide you with access if you develop and release a working homebrew. Also, this site servers as a versioning system, as it would be nearly impossible to have multiple people updating somone's code without some sort of versioning system to help manage it all.

I don't think their is a section for tutorials or simple documents though. A website (as you plan to make) would be better suited for that than a SVN or CVS repository.

Garak - Yeah, I'm aware of the ps2dev svn. What I'm talking about would be less about large, complex projects and more about smaller projects that are commented specifically for learning purposes. There is a ton of extraneous info in the SVN. I'm hoping to provide something more user friendly than just a huge code repository

yes at the moment i have 3 dedicated servers.
the one on a 100mbit line has the following:
2.8ghz p4
1gig ddr
120gig hd
2tb monthly bandwidth (will be unlimited soon)
freebsd 5.4

so really, we will be able to use most of that (but not use more than say 10gig bandwidth and 2gb space?

Great idea. I have a few scrapped tiling engines I can probably clean up and contribute.

It'd be nice to have a user-friendly place to find more out when you're stuck. ****** can be kinda.... disheartening (if you're not already the smartest person alive, of course..)

Ah, I see :P

Well, I just ordered three domains for this site
psp-programming.com
pspprogramming.com
and
psprogramming.com

I set them up to just go to my hosting account that I already have since I have unlimited domains for it and so much extra space. If it ends up not working out (whether it be that the site ends up using too much CPU time or whatever, we can try a different host).

Edit: I took out the links so that googlebot won't go to the sites yet, you get penalized for having uncomplete sites spidered.

Edit2: Looks like it propagated. So, what to do first? Get the wiki set up?

for now, the best thing would be to get a simple phpbb2 forum set up...
just keep it updated it with news...
keep building the backend with the wiki and other stuff, and finally open all of it at the same time to the public
