Default High School Devs: What Kind of Classes Are Available to you?

At my school, all there is is just a VB class for half a year, and a Java class for a full year, that they say is for college credit. Yeldarb was telling me that he took a C++ course at his school. What kind of classes can you take?

I'm in middle school, but I signed up for all the programming classes because I plan to be a programmer later in my lifetime...

VB and Java.
I'm gonna take VB, but that'll probably take me nowhere. It would probably be best to self-teach myself a language like C++, but I just don't know where to start.

And what exactly are the programming classes? That's the point of this thread. C++? Java? C? Perl? HTML? etc...

Mine only has programming in Visual Studios.net envirorment, Im not sure if i should take it, Chingwyn said its easy as a walkthrough. (to make a button you only dolike 2 things).

I might just not take it, but i need an elective credit and a Tech credit, so Ill just breeze through it. =>

All we have is HTML - I aced it - the teacher looked up to me, he asked me for help. It was ridiculous. Just to extend the stupid project, I added JavaScript, CSS and PHP to my page, but I had to remove it... grr.

At my highschool, Java and HTML classes are offered but they teach you absolutely nothing. Well, nothing you couldn't have learned from reading a tutorial or two from the Internet. I'm taking a Java programming class this year, and all I've learned to do is draw shapes onto windows (it has been about 3/4 of the school year already, pretty sad). Plus the teacher doesn't know what she's doing half the time. I usually have to help her get her programs to work and I end up helping other students with their programs. Just recently we started doing HTML programming since we have to do applets and crap. The teacher doesn't know much about that either and I amazed her with some simple Javascript (alerts o.-; ). I've started to see the class as a free period with a computer. I usually finish my homework there or take games (mostly roms), plug in some headphones, and enjoy the period. =P

Yeah here we have C++ as an intro programming class (2 semesters, Comp Sci I and Comp Sci II) -> I enjoyed the class even though I already knew how to program in other languages.

And then we have AP Comp Sci which is in Java. And I agree with everyone above, Java sucks.

Thats funny, my library teacher cauhgt me looking at our schools source code for the home page, she must have thought i was doing something (...possibly making it say im sexy ? hehe ;->), then my 'intro to computers / keyboard technology' class last year was pretty stupid, typing programs adn PowerPoint on macs... ugh, but i found a way to enjoy my self...

I modded this NanoSaur game so i was a giant teradatcle, and instead of dropping rocks, they were these nuke type things that are in the game, all possible via a Hex Editor... and http s://proxify[dot]com the annonymous proxy site to get by BESS and download Hex Editor... I also coded some simple HTML pages and such while i was bored, just opened up AppleWorks and coded it, saved it as .html and viewed, pretty simple.

Oh and i was forced to be on a MAC, the teacher only had MACs, they suck in my opinon

I'm impressed with how young most of you are and the opportunity that most of you are given in school. It might date me a little, but the first exposure that I had to programming was writing GOTO's on a Commodore 64 and the only computer experience I got in school was typing on a Apple IIe.

Languages like html aside, I don't think it's so important what you're learning. Java and C++ have some glaring differences, but the transition between the two is incredibly easy because most of the concepts are compatible. If you know about polymorphism and encapsulation, the syntax is easy to pick up. If you understand the concept of a Singleton, putting one together in both Java and C++ is trivial. These obviously aren't the only concepts that you need to learn, they're just some examples and I'm not saying that syntax isn't important. You need to understand it to see examples of the concepts. But, speaking from experience, learning concepts will best serve you in the future.

Again, kudos to the people trying to learn these concepts in a pre-college environment. You're further along than I was.

What about "Fraction Munchers",

Every grade school kid from the day had to have had a "computer" class where all you did was sit around and play Fraction Munchers? How else are kinds going to learn the true potential of a PC?

hmmm....

Why not learn on your own via tutorials by Yeldarb? (Brad) I too am in 8th grade, just sent high shool registration to the school. I have COmputer Programming as 1st course, but its on Visual Studios.net so its gonna be WAY to easy, I might just tell the teacher i know C / C++ well enough to not have to listen to them....
